We’re getting ready to tidy up the backyard – here’s what to know

You must start with the idea that you are not going to create an ideal environment, and beauty is a matter of taste and the best thing would be to dispense with the opinion of neighbors or friends. The most important thing to note is that each patio is designed to please the host’s eyes and should match their hobbies and lifestyle. In fact, old trees, hedges or other ornamental plants can become an obstacle to redesign the environment, but everything is fixed.

Kristina Juškienė, who bought land in the Dvarčionys garden beds in the capital a few years ago, recalled the first impression that a small garden plot made on her. “Then they proudly told me how many treats they grew, showed me a huge concrete compost, a chicken coop in various parts and explained to me how well I could live here. But the eye just wasn’t hooked. “

However, he perfectly understood that in the Soviet era, the garden plot was a place where the townspeople bowed and fought for food, but he wanted a space where he could create a harmonious and pleasant place to relax. Over the years, Kristina, who calls herself an amateur gardener, has tried many transformation options, read literature, communicated with like-minded people on social media, and today her little garden has become a refreshment for the soul.

By agreeing to share his experience, he recognized that the help of landscape professionals would be valuable in such cases, but that not everyone can afford it. “On the other hand, the environment is a dump for mistakes and their fixes, because this is where the creative potential is best revealed, and finally the plants that can be planted out of place can be transplanted, so my advice to all is that they try, make mistakes and correct them, “said Kristina.

The hostess began the transformation of her plot by cutting down trees. The free trees, irregular in shape, intertwined with fruit trees, seemed too heavy for a small plot, more reminiscent of a jungle than a pleasant environment ”. I decided to leave two large trees and cut down the rest, ”shared Kristina. – The same fate ran the bushes, I moved some of them to the edges of the plot. Of course, we demolish the waste barn, the old window greenhouses, we clean the plot. My advice is this: choose easy to prune, form plants, flower beds, ornamental shrubs to plant on the edges of the plot. It is better to use lighter colors (light flowers and leaves); This gives the impression of spaciousness, so I really liked the flexibility.

First of all – the grass

According to Kristina, it is best to start the management of the old plot from the grass. Its beauty is revealed when it is empty and clean. So, after cutting down trees and shrubs, it began to form a lawn. They all just spoil the big picture and interfere with mower work, Kristina said. “By the way, as soon as the grass bloomed, the previously loaded plot seemed to breathe and become spacious.”

According to the gardener, the grass is very receptive to nutrients, it expands quickly, so it soon conquers the undergrowth and the plant has to share nutrients. You can constantly mow the grass around the tree, confine it to buried fences, or mulch it to avoid the problem, but it will still remain. If the plants do not grow on the lawn, but outside it, then the right conditions are created for them and we ourselves avoid the additional work.

The shape of the lawn does not matter: those who like the classic style can choose the shape of a square, rectangle or circle. For lovers of a freer style, a landscape form may be appropriate. In any case, Kristina’s advice would be to define the boundaries of the lawn with expressive curves and other surfaces, ”admitted the amateur gardener.

The magic of the stream

Landscape architects in small gardens recommend highlighting a special plant, sculpture or other small architectural object as an accent, around which other elements could be placed as the main axis. Ornamental plants, a body of water, a path are the main elements of the composition of the environment, they are desirable in both large and small gardens. Once upon a time, Kristina’s dream was a small stream that snaked through waterfalls.

Thus it appeared in a clearly visible part of the plot. Bodies of water should be installed according to the following rule: the smaller the garden space, the smaller the pond to be installed. That’s what Kristina did. The narrow and slightly meandering stream visually deepened the space, making the small patch appear larger than it actually is.

“Such a stream needs little maintenance, and the plants can be planted in a number of ways, not just those that like moisture,” said the gardener. – Streams can be combined with rock gardens. It is better to sprinkle the bottom with fine gravel and small stones, then the flow of water is clearly visible. It is true that lately my stream has dried up because we do not spend much time in the garden and, since we installed it ourselves, it started to let water in. But even when it is dry, it fulfills its decorative function and adorns the environment ”.

Naturalistic style

Depending on the gardener, even if the space is very small, a few hanging pots on the balcony or on the steps of the stairs, an accent wall of climbing plants, aquatic plants in a pot or stones will help create a nice green corner. . And she’s happy with the modern craze for flower garden setup – landscape trends are moving towards ecology.

Naturalness is valued: the closer to the wildlife, the more beautiful; the less I work with soil and flowers, the better. Well-groomed lawns and cultivated flower gardens become obsolete, they are replaced by a naturalistic style. “And in small plots, it is very important to maintain integrity, choose a style, not go overboard with the variety of plants and the range of colors,” Kristina explained.

Another important tip: in the warm season, outdoor furniture, which should be adapted to the cottage, decorated with natural and environmentally friendly colors, shapes and materials. Small cushions or tastefully combined dishes on a table in the garden will always look cozy and aesthetically pleasing.

However, he suggests looking carefully at the tips, because the most important thing is to create a soul-friendly environment based on your hobbies, which will not fail to please. The environment should be welcoming and harmonious, without making you think that you have to change something every time.

Flower garden training

The basis of the vegetation are structural plants with architectural features, decorative throughout the season.

Themed plants fill the base between the structural plants, are decorative out of season, and replace each other.

Vegetable accents attract attention with special properties, they are planted one by one to stand out.

Complementary plants that provide spontaneity, for example annual or bulbous flowers in mixed or perennial flower gardens.
