“As soon as we saw those images in the Middle East, today our services are working to keep people out of arms. And they are running here with guns, and you know, these are radical Muslims, and that’s just the beginning. I have already said that armed people will continue to go, and if that man, after going through the Syrian war, reaches the border, then he will not only defend pregnant Muslim women. After all, you understand what will happen there then. ” Lukashenko said.
Laurynas Kasčiūnas, chairman of the Seimas Defense and National Security Committee (NSGC), considered that if there was at least a shout of truth in their words, then they could only be armed in Belarus.
“This means that this can only happen in case of participation of the regime,” said L. Kasčiūnas.
Lukashenko blackmails Lithuanian officials as much as he can.
“He rounded up 26 people, mostly women and children, confiscated documents, smashed them in the eyes, then drove them to the Belarusian border, lined up as fascists and forced them to flee by shooting them above the head,” he said.
Border guards have already called such accusations absurd. However, ways are being sought to strengthen the State Border Guard Service (SBGS).
“We are trying to recover former employees, civil servants, offering them certain positions, to carry out certain functions. Right now, there are already around thirty people who would like to work, ”said Vidas Mačaitis, deputy commander of SBGS.
Don’t take threats seriously
However, the border guards do not take Lukashenko’s threats seriously.
“We value everything wisely. I couldn’t respond now, but I wouldn’t want to react in any way to the speeches of a reckless person, “said V. Mačaitis.
According to the SBGS deputy commander, there will be no further preparations for this.
“We have already strengthened our forces and we are sufficiently armed,” said V. Mačaitis.
According to the NSGK president, Lithuania is ready for various provocations.
“The border guards have a special operations department. There are other structures of the Ministry of the Interior: the Public Security Service, Aras. They are ready for such provocations. If that was not enough, there is the army of the Republic of Lithuania,” he said. L. Kasčiūnas.
Lukashenko wants to sit at the negotiating table
L. Kasčiūnas is convinced that Lukashenko simply wants to force Lithuania to come to the negotiating table.
“When you try to force the other side to the negotiating table, it is basically about changing the foreign and security policy of that country, limiting its independence and sovereignty. This is its strategic line, we are going to evaluate everything properly,” he said.
Chancellor Gabriel Landsberg saw this as an element of blackmail in an attempt to avoid talking about possible new sanctions.
Experts agree that Lukashenko will not necessarily present armed people.
“It just came to our attention then. They ‘arrested’ those people, they imitated how they helped Lithuania. It is obvious that the Belarusian regime wants to come to the negotiating table,” said political scientist Vytis Jurkonis.
In late May, Lukashenko threatened to flood Lithuania with a wave of immigrants. And he kept that promise.
