Serious tests await drivers since spring. Due to the construction of the overpass on Avenida Baltijos, one of the main entrances to the city via the Vilnius highway will be significantly reduced. Restrictions on Avenida Baltijos were also approved at the meeting of the Road Safety Commission.
Probably the biggest traffic jams will meet Klaipeda residents on the Vilnius highway in mid-April.
Coming from the Jakai roundabout, just in front of the Circle K gas station, you will need to turn left towards the Banginis shopping center.
Then it will be necessary to join the roundabout of the Šilutė motorway and Baltijos avenue. There will be two lanes for returnees and a single lane for those leaving the city, from the Avenida Baltijos ring.
It will probably take you three months to drive like this, from mid-April to mid-summer.
“We will endeavor to ensure that the works on the Vilnius highway start only after the installation of a temporary crossing through the railway at the continuation of Statybinink aven avenue,” promised Klaipėda Deputy Mayor Arūnas Barbšys.
As there is no intention to restrict truck traffic, an additional artery is simply needed for those entering and leaving Klaipeda.
Even before the closure of part of the Vilnius highway, citizens also faced restrictions on Baltijos Avenue.
In a few weeks work is planned on the northern part of the road from the roundabout to the bend.
Restrictions are not new to Klaipeda residents here: they had to tire of traffic jams last fall.
This time the opposite side is closed. One lane will be left for those leaving the roundabout on Avenida Baltijos and two for those entering.
However, even with two lanes, drivers will not be able to enjoy the entire stretch.
“The trees are growing on the other side of the road, so we decided not to remove them due to temporary restrictions,” explained A.Barbšys.
The reconstruction of Avenida Baltijos began last fall.
The easel is expected to be completed in two years.
The cost of the project is 1.6 million. euros.
