The Trakai District Municipality has announced that the rail crossing will be closed from March 14 to September 15.
At this junction, Lentvaris residents reached the designated parts of the city by rail and made their way to Trakai, Vilnius. It caused a lot of inconvenience, so plans to install a tunnel under the mobile railway have been maturing since the Soviet era.
Once the crossing is closed, car traffic will also stop on Vokės and Fabriko streets.
Pedestrians will not be able to cross the railway at that place, they will have to use a tunnel a few hundred meters away at the train station.
There is a parking lot at the closed intersection. Across the railroad, there is only one parking for vehicles at the Maxima shopping center.
The closure of the crossing is due to the installation of a car tunnel on the site. The project’s contractor, Tilsta, has agreed to hire a vehicle to transport the children to educational institutions, since after closing the crossing, parents will not be able to drive from one side of the city to the other.
Construction work on the tunnel began last fall. The value of the project contract is 20.7 million. euros. The work must be completed within 9 months after the contract takes effect.
According to Remigijus Lipkevičius, head of the Lithuanian Highway Administration, the implementation of the project will improve communication, increase safety and solve the problem when there is a long queue at the crossing.
Because the crossing is closed 11 hours a day due to train traffic.
