Von der Leyen: positions in Brexit negotiations remain “widely separated”

“We have had a lively and interesting discussion about the state of the various issues that have arisen,” von der Leyen said after a working dinner with Prime Minister of the United Kingdom (UK) Boris Johnson.

“We clearly understood the positions of the others. They stay away from each other, “he said.

“We agreed that the teams should meet immediately and try to solve these key problems. We will make a decision before the end of the weekend ”, confirmed the President of the European Commission.

Meanwhile, a senior British source said the talks were “candid” but that it was not yet clear whether “very big differences” between the two sides could be resolved.

According to the source, the leaders agreed to continue discussions between the negotiating teams, and a “firm decision” must be taken on Sunday.

The UK withdrew from the EU at the end of January. It is true that there is a transition period until the end of this year, during which the daily life of the British will not change substantially.

The UK remains part of the single market and the EU customs union, complies with EU law and contributes to the EU budget.

However, if no agreement can be reached on new relationships, the so-called Brexitas will take place without a contract, leading to significant financial problems.
