On Friday night, firefighters rushed downtown to put out the flames on a ship called the Meridian, a symbol of the city. A cloud of smoke had engulfed the entire ship, so passersby might have suspected that the barrel was on fire.
However, it turned out that the smoke cloud was caused by the burning of two sofas that were on the deck.
Preliminary guesses, they could have been lit from the outside heater because there were no other sources of fire on the deck.
At that time, the restaurant, which was on board, had 14 visitors. The restaurant staff asked them to leave the ship as soon as possible.
Upon the arrival of the firefighters, fourteen visitors and eight restaurant employees had already been evacuated. The people did not suffer.
Firefighters quickly put out the couches, which was enough for a fire syringe. According to firefighters, the dense smoke was caused by ignition of flammable materials from which the furniture was made.

But the deck of the ship looked sadder. When the flames were extinguished, it turned out that the 20-square-meter deck area had burned down. The ship was last repaired in October 2020.
However, the exact circumstances of the fire will only be clarified after investigation.
Smoke from a burning ship spread across the Dangė Embankment, and people walking through the old town gathered to take in the unexpected sight.
Barkentina was completely renovated eight years ago. The ship returning to its old place was greeted by the crowd of Klaipeda residents at the time.
Klaipeda Mayor Vytautas Grubliauskas soon reacted to the fire in Meridian.
“I want to reassure all fans and friends of the Klaipeda ‘Meridian’ city symbol. The fire has been completely extinguished and although some damage has been done, I hope it will be minimal and will be restored very quickly,” wrote the administrator of the city on Facebook.
According to him, the most important thing is that in the future this decoration of the city will continue to be the decoration that delights, inspires and caresses the hearts, eyes and … the stomach of those who eat there.
“I spoke with Aloyz Kuzmarski, the owner of Meridiano, who assured me that the Barkentina team with fire extinguishers in place were able to locate and put out the fire. And the firefighters and rescuers came so that everyone was calm and sure that the threat had been completely eliminated ”, assured V. Grubliauskas and assured that the restaurant would be open at night, so that those who planned a cozy evening in Meridiane would not. lose.
“Let’s watch and be attentive and very careful with the fire, and soon the real reasons will be clarified,” the mayor of the city wished at the end of the recording.
