“From a data point of view, nothing should be published,” the virologist told the program.
He said he understood the government was taking risks because people needed quarantined releases.
“But since people are tired, they want different activities. And as the weather improves, the risk of being outdoors is much lower, which will encourage people to be outdoors, to go to the nearby forest for a walk. It is necessary, we cannot ignore not only those economic moments, but also psychological ones. For this reason, this Government, realizing the great need and taking risks, opens it where we do not see much of that variety, ”said I. Olendraitė.
He said current quarantine restrictions buy time, slowing the arrival of the British breed in the country.
“Still, it will be in all districts, in all counties, here 100 percent. All vaccines work well against this strain, it would be nice not to have this strain in all areas as it grows very fast. And not to fill hospitals. The most recent information is that the mortality of this strain of the virus is higher. It is better in this case to add a little, or leave the restrictions in those municipalities where there is a lot of virus. And where it is not yet – so that people can breathe “Said the interlocutor.
Sequence studies indicating which virus strain is spreading in Lithuania show the fastest growth of the British strain. Still, this is data from a few weeks ago.
“We know that the virus is spreading. If it is transmitted to more than one person, it usually spreads exponentially. And this strain of the virus is spreading even faster. Although the sequence data is delayed, but the virus does not come out of nowhere. Their numbers and proportions grow over time in the same beautiful exponential curve.
We see that already a couple of weeks ago and from older data, there is a sufficiently large amount of this variety in certain counties. But it’s still not 100 percent, which means it could be worse. And we still don’t see it in other counties or municipalities, “virologist I. Olendraitė said Tuesday morning.
He stated that since a sufficiently large number of British coronavirus strains are recorded in Vilnius, the spread is quite large.
“Imagine if all of Lithuania was considered completely closed. There are certain clear hotspots where that variety extends. From the results of the sequencing, we see more cuts, not only what is happening only in Vilnius, but we can see the whole country” said the interlocutor.
Virologist I. Olendraitė explained why the results of sequencing studies take so long. According to her, the procedure takes about a week: the remnants of the samples must be handed over, prepared for sequencing, the dedicated device is running for a couple of days, and the results are obtained after a few more days.
He said that, looking at the data in Vilnius, it can already be assumed that the number of the British breed is growing.
“We can look at Vilnius. This data comes from more than 500 genome sequences, with samples examined even further. You can see in Vilnius that 14 to 21 percent of all the cases we investigate are of the British variety. It’s about a delay of about 2 weeks. One can look at a factor like the absence of the S gene, it correlates quite well. This is 26 to 27 percent in some labs. We see these numbers are growing, “said I. Olendraitė in the program “Delfi rytas”.
He explained that if a particular strain of a virus is widespread, with very few samples taken, there is still a high probability of being caught.
I. Olendraitė requested the vaccination. This, according to the interlocutors, will help complete the quarantine and can also save lives.
