Endured less than half a year
Austėja “Delfi Būstas” from Vilnius says that her expectations were not very high: she had repeatedly heard various stories about Kalvarijų street in Vilnius. Especially many of them are related to the area around the Calvary Markets. However, despite the reputation of the area, according to Austėja, his rented apartment was in very good condition.
“At the time, the apartment itself seemed really good to me, that is, Recently renovated, maintained, clean, had everything you need and a helpful hostess. However, since my work hours are from 8 am to 5 pm , I decided that the apartment would be suitable, because I don’t spend a lot of time there ”, recalls Austėja.
The interlocutor continues that in his new home when he was one month old, he began to mock his neighbors. According to her, it was not pleasant to meet people who lived in the neighborhood, since the latter were often drunk. Soon she got to know her neighbors better.
“A family had a baby there. Other neighbors were constantly angry out loud. I heard one woman complain to another that she was hitting her, more than once on the stairs I saw her cry with that other young mom who was calming down. Sometimes the door slammed shut and they couldn’t get in, “says the interlocutor.
The girl goes on to say that she has repeatedly seen a drunk and unconscious neighbor lying on the ground.
“I waited in the car once until I left and was able to return home without problems, aftershocks, etc.,” says Austėja.
Recalling her life on Kalvarijų Street near the market square, Austėja says that police officers have visited here more than once. Also, one that she was not afraid of any of her neighbors.
“A neighbor kept talking to me, saying, inviting me to have tea, he was not happy, he was afraid, when he met him, he started talking to me about religion, his opinion on banks.” I tried to get out quickly. And my movement was late at night, in the dark, so that no one spoke to me or noticed me. In a word, I would not recommend it to a decent person, “says the girl.
According to the interlocutor, the owner of the apartment in which he lived was an older woman. During the first 3 months to collect the rent, she came to the apartment, spent more than two hours there several times, telling various stories.
“They talked about their jobs, about her ex-husband, then about a new friend, about her illnesses, and generally left with wishes because I really liked her,” recalls the girl.
She continues that 5 months later she told the landlord that she wanted to move out. Since the lease was for one year, the landlord did not want to return the deposit. However, an agreement was later reached.
Problematic neighbors can be everywhere
Problem neighbors can probably be found in all areas. According to Danasi Būstas, director of real estate company Vilniaus-Turtas, real estate expert Antanas Kudarauskas, a non-problematic person may appear in every apartment building, but his behavior changed after the accident. According to A. Kudarauskas, people, before buying a house, are generally not interested in the image of the entire district, but in their possible closest neighbors.

The interlocutor continues that there are cases in which people want to change due to housing, but often problematic neighbors are an incentive for a long-term solution. According to A. Kudarauskas, there would be no need to stick labels on neighborhoods, but some of them really don’t have any reputations. On the other hand, it can be changed quickly.
“There is a general image of the district, a place that people try to choose less frequently than others. That is temporary, nothing is permanent, when a big project arises, a new project is developed and the area is improved, which can change the image of the area, people often start to change their opinion about the area and the people who they live there, ”emphasizes the real estate expert.
The interviewee goes on to say that investing in real estate in the district is enough to improve the reputation of the district. Investments make the district more attractive to settlers, and young people move to it. Property prices are rising in that neighborhood, so older residents, troubled people, are selling their properties until their price is higher. This is how the district changes.
“It was not the entire Kalvarijų street that had a negative impression, but the part next to the market. There were casinos, discos. But with the introduction of restrictions on the alcohol trade, the ban on the take-away food trade, many of the troubled places, where there was an increase in crime, have improved. Not only on Kalvarijų Street, but also in other areas, ”says a real estate expert on Kalvarijų Street in Vilnius.
