Vilnius-Kaunas highway celebrates its birthday: how it has changed in the last 50 years

Today, the average annual traffic intensity in this section exceeds 30 thousand. cars. This is the largest traffic flow not only in Lithuania, but also in the Baltic States (Latvia, Estonia).

Currently, intensive reconstruction work is underway on the section of the A1 Vilnius – Kaunas – Klaipėda highway between Vilnius and Kaunas. The work has already been completed in individual sections, but the whole project will be completed next year. Once road safety measures are implemented and individual sections of the road are rebuilt, the road will meet the requirements applicable to the highway and will be able to run at 130 km / h. speed in summer and 110 km / h. speed in winter. Here, safe and comfortable traffic conditions will be ensured, in accordance with the volume of traffic, the importance of the road and international standards.

During the implementation of the project of the main highway A1 Vilnius – Kaunas – Klaip ,da, in the section from Vilnius to Kaunas, metal protection barriers are installed on the strip of the dividing road, on part of the sections of the highway, fences are installed network of wild animals. Acceleration and deceleration lanes are also being rebuilt, sidewalks and crossings are being installed at different levels, speed control and warning systems are being installed, lighting is being installed and other works are being carried out.

The section of the highway A1 Vilnius – Kaunas – Klaipėda from 10.00 to 95.00 km is being reconstructed according to five agreements (the project consists of the reconstruction of 5 sections) signed by the Lithuanian Highway Administration with 2 contractors . The total value of the entire project is about 43 million. euros. The EU share of investment in this project now amounts to € 25.8 million. euros.

By order of Minister of Transport and Communications Jaroslav Narkevič, another 7.4 million LTL was allocated to improve traffic conditions and safety on the main Vilnius – Kaunas road. investments of EU funds.

“We hope that the additional investments will improve connections between regional centers and ensure traffic conditions for local road users and vehicles in transit that meet international standards”, emphasizes J. Narkevič.

“Today, there are many more cars on the roads built half a century ago, so safe and comfortable traffic conditions must be ensured. For this purpose, modern safety and traffic management measures are being implemented, with which 50 years ago years both road builders and traffic participants could only dream, ”says Remigijus Lipkevičius, director of the Lithuanian Highway Administration.

According to R. Lipkevičius, one of the priorities of the Highway Administration is to develop the country’s highway network by creating a comfortable, safe and fast communication infrastructure. This ambition is confirmed by the works carried out on the roads of state importance, and some of the most important changes await drivers on the Vilnius-Kaunas road.

In June this year, the overhaul of the section of the main highway A1 Vilnius – Kaunas – Klaipėda from 100.47 to 101.79 km was completed. Work on this stage was carried out from the Kleboniškis bridge to the Sargėnai intersection: the section is distributed over 10 lanes of traffic, additional acceleration and deceleration lanes have been installed, as well as a retaining wall and a noise barrier over 1 km long on the left side of the road. These works cost around 17.5 million. EUR.

In the summer of 2021, one of the most important parts of the Vilnius-Kaunas reconstruction project will be completed: a new bridge will connect the banks of the Neris River with Kaunas. During the execution of the project “On the execution of the reconstruction project of the state highway A1 Vilnius – Kaunas – Klaip Sectionda section from 99.29 to 100.47 km”, a viaduct will also be built on Jonavos street and a highway will be built connection on the right side of the highway A1 Vilnius – Kaunas – Klaipėda. The value of this project is more than 32 million euros.
