At the end of the summer season, the Vilnius City Council will start on Wednesday the demolition of the artificial Open Beach at Lukiškės Square. The work should continue from early in the morning until late at night, and the sand from this beach will be transported to other beaches in Vilnius.

“This project aimed at promoting tourism has undoubtedly become one of the most important summer events in Lithuania. The beach sent a message to everyone about Vilnius: here is a city where the freedom and joy of children win against the tyranny of the bureaucracy, ”confirms Vilnius Mayor Remigijus Šimašius in a press release.

According to the mayor, the success of Lukiškės beach forces us to also think about similar summer projects for next year.

The beach at Lukiškės Square was created at the end of June in response to a quarantine-restricted foreign holiday, so Vilnius became a resort town with a beach in the city center for one summer. During the summer weekends, Vilnius also became other foreign countries, attracting its culture, food and events.

1660 square meters m area of the beach uses 300 cubic meters of sand.
