According to Vilniaus Vandenys, on Saturdays and Sundays, the specialists carried out unscheduled inspections of the wastewater entering the company and recorded the contamination of the wastewater with plastic parts, which should not be present in the wastewater discharged by the companies.

Vilniaus Vandenys is blocking the reception of UAB Ecso wastewater, the discharge of which has registered a possible violation. The plastic parts detected in time were avoided and did not enter the natural environment, ”reports the company.

The company claims that it has promptly informed environmentalists in the Vilnius region of the recorded contamination.

The report indicates that the wastewater pumping station has been stopped and a plug has been installed in the pipeline, through which the Ecso wastewater flows to the Vilniaus Vandenai treatment plants.

Marius Švaikauskas, the company’s CEO, says that suspicions that plastic-contaminated wastewater is allowed in treatment plants have emerged in the past week and have been confirmed. According to him, the reception of wastewater from this company will resume only when the plastic is gone.

In January, Vilniaus Vandenys, following public signs, had already registered the contamination of a company belonging to the Ecso group of companies, then the wastewater reception was also suspended and resumed only after the company ensured that it would take action and it would make sure the plastic particles were gone.

According to the Vilnius municipal company, at that time a Pollution Prevention Group was created, responsible for controlling the largest companies in the capital, and more frequent unscheduled inspections were carried out.

Vilniaus Vandenys states that the release of plastic in wastewater is a “criminal activity”, because the treatment plants are not adapted for the collection of particles and this can only be done on an emergency basis, with specific equipment.
