There were 93 parliamentarians in favor of Razma’s candidacy by secret ballot, 31 against and four abstentions. A newsletter is not valid. He was also named first vice president of the Seimas.
84 members of the Seimas voted in favor of A. Mazuronis, 38 against and six abstained. A newsletter is not valid.
In total, the Lithuanian National Christian Democratic Union (TS-LKD) plans to have three deputies in parliament, one – the Freedom Party. The remaining vice presidents of the Seimas are scheduled to be approved next week,
Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen, spokesperson for the Seimas, appointed A. Mazuronis as the representative of the opposition, but other opposition peasants and Social Democrats did not support her. They were surprised that a representative of the smaller opposition group was appointed to the parliamentary leadership, although she would not have a vice president.
According to the Statute of the Seimas, the head of parliament cannot have more than seven deputies. However, the coalition partners have agreed that there will be six.

Although it was considered that the candidacy of the peasant representative Aušrinė Norkienė would be presented on Friday, the president of the Seimas presented the candidacy of the representative of the Labor Party Andrius Mazuronis. This enraged the leader of the largest opposition faction, Ramūnas Karbauskis.
“This faction, the Lithuanian Green and Peasant Union faction, which I have to lead, has more than half of all the faction members working in the opposition. <...> I would like to ask you why today you are proposing a representative of the smaller opposition fraction to the representatives of the vice president of Seimas, and not our candidate, ”asked R. Karbauskis in the Seimas session.
To this, the president of the Seimas, Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen, replied: “Today we have to vote for at least two vice-presidents of the Seimas and we will continue this procedure next week.”
The farmer A. Nekrošius asked the employee what the president of the Seimas promised or how impressed that the candidacy of A. Mazuronis will be presented on Friday.
“I will probably be very surprised or not at all surprised to say that I did not promise anything and I heard this news practically only when I came here and saw the question on the monitor screen,” replied Mazuronis.
Peasant Tom Tomilinas asked if A. Mazuronis coordinated his candidacy with his colleagues from the Labor Party and if the conflict with the party would not become hostage.
“No, I will not be held hostage, and if you are interested in the procedures of our party, I can give you the phone number of our president, Viktor Uspaskich, and you can call and ask him,” Mazuronis replied.
The question why the candidacy of A. Mazuronis was not raised by the peasant candidates was posed not only by T. Tomilinas, other peasants such as Giedrius Surplys, Kęstutis Mažeika or Agnė Širinskienė, but also by the social democrat Algirdas Sysas. According to him, due to such behavior of the rulers, the Social Democrats do not plan to support the candidacy of A. Mazuronis.
“The current majority of the Seimas may feel a bit uncomfortable, they do not want to repeat the situation of the Union of Peasants and Greens, when the majority has become a minority. Apparently there is a post mortem agreement. To declare opposition does not mean to be opposition. Attending to the deputies, we believe that there is an agreement, so to speak, a place to buy for loyalty in making one decision or another, ”said A. Sysas.
“On this exceptional day for all of us, we are slowly moving towards the usual parliamentary bustle, all kinds of theatrical elements. But I hope there is still enthusiasm in your hearts after the oath. very great challenge, ”said J. Razma, who has spent several terms in parliament, from the Seimas rostrum.
He noted that the thirteenth term will also be extraordinary due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, according to the conservative, the coronavirus and its consequences should not lead to a simplified parliamentary process.
“On the contrary, I believe that the activities of the parliament must be constructed with great precision,” Razma said.
The peasant Arvydas Nekrošius asked the conservative if he supported the legalization of a gender neutral society.
“I think this is a topic that we will all have a frank discussion about. There can be no simple and quick answers here. I invite you to look sincerely at this problem and I believe that we can reach a consensus without trying to collect political capital on this issue, although there are convenient times for that, ”J. Razma replied.
When asked by fellow member Mykolas Majauskas how he “intends to educate the mischievous members of the Seimas,” J. Razma emphasized that the Seimas is not a kindergarten where education is needed.
“I do not agree that the Seimas is a kindergarten and an educator is needed here. I think this is a mistake. On the contrary, I believe that if the members of the Seimas express confidence in me, they have the right to educate me, to to reprimand me, to demand it, and I just have to nod and say you’re right, “said J. Razma.
Kasparas Adomaitis, a representative of the Freedom Party, asked if the Seimas Hotel should not be sold and MPs who need a place to live in the capital should look for housing in the private sector.
“I personally agree with you, but these are issues on which we all need to reach an amicable agreement,” Razma said.
The curator considered that the subject of the sale of the Seimas hotel could be adopted next year.
“It is really possible to foresee that instead of staying in a Seimas hotel, a Seimas member would be allocated some money to rent a house in Vilnius. A member of the Seimas could also be allowed to pay with parliamentary expenses if that rent is more expensive. <...> It would be more convenient for everyone if we rent a house on the market, ”said J. Razma.
The Liberal Movement will be left without a vice president, as the party’s leader, Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen, has become the spokesperson for the Seimas. He contemplates many tasks in his new job, including improving the quality of Seimas work and joining to manage the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Speaker of the Seimas, after consulting the factions, proposes the candidates for Vice Presidents in such a way that at least two representatives of the opposition of the Seimas are deputies. The deputies of the president of the Seimas are elected by secret ballot.
The Seimas, which met for its first session on Friday for the 2020-2024 period, began its work. Six factions were also established in the new Seimas: Lithuanian Christian National-Democratic Union (50 members), Lithuanian Peasants and Greens Union (32 members), Liberal Movement (13 members), Lithuanian Social Democratic Party (13 members), Party of Liberty (11 members) and the Labor Party (10 members).
At the moment, 12 parliamentarians will work in the mixed group of members of the Seimas.
81 former MPs were re-elected to the thirteenth Seimas and 60 new members were elected. The Seimas will be made up of 38 women and 103 men. Their average age is 49 years, 99 percent. future parliamentarians have higher education, mainly law and political science.
Representatives from ten parties will work in the new parliament, the largest member – 50 – will have members of the Christian Democratic faction of the National-Lithuanian Union.
When the new parliament takes office, the government of Prime Minister S. Skvernel will return its powers to the president. She should be appointed to a temporary post until a new center-right government is formed, led by Ingrida Šimonytė.
