4-year-old Veronica, who will celebrate her fifth birthday in October, is Oksana’s second daughter. This pregnancy was no different than the first, there were no signs that anything could be wrong.
“I went to the doctor in private, I had an ultrasound almost every month, but not a word said that there could be such a disability. The blood tests were always good and I felt good without any signs, ”says Oksana.
So after Veronika gave birth, both the doctors and the girl’s mother were shocked: Veronica’s left leg is much shorter than her right. The right leg is also not completely healthy: it has only 3 fingers, it has no heel, and as it turned out later, the knee joint also needs to be changed.

“It just came to our knowledge then. My reaction was like this, but I realized that it is the way it is and I can’t change anything. Over time, we just lived together. I had a lot of support from people close to me, maybe it was easier for me and it was about that. Clearly, the shock was due to not knowing what to do, as I would be here in the future. You ask “Why?”, but the question is rhetorical because I can’t find the right answer, “says the girl’s mother.
Everything can be replaced by an expensive operation
When Veronika was born, it was unclear how things would go next: Šiauliai’s doctors had encountered such a situation for the first time, so they did not know what to advise.
“When Veronika was 2 or 1.5 years old, she had a prosthesis made at a clinic in Kaunas. However, that prosthesis was very painful and he could not walk, and something better still cannot be administered in Lithuania, ”says Oksana.
Veronica’s right leg is also not completely healthy, making it very difficult and painful for her to stand up with a simple prosthesis. He only has 3 toes on his right leg, he has no heel, so he cannot make full use of the supporting leg in his station.
Still, there is hope that Veronica can not only stand, but also walk without pain. However, its price for the single family does not bite.
“My mother lives in the United States and she managed to find a doctor, Paley. He had come to Warsaw, we had gone to find him. He inspected Veronica and said that there is an opportunity to do 3 operations, 2 of which will be very complex.
His heel would also be made, his knee joint would be changed, his leg would be straightened. And the other leg would be a prosthesis, she would make a knee joint so that she could bend her leg, walk. Sure, run, maybe she won’t run, but at least she’ll be able to stand up. And in Lithuania and near Lithuania there are no opportunities for similar operations.
We charge that money because the operation is very expensive and with rehabilitation they give you 325 thousand. Dollars. I am raising children alone, I do not have the opportunity to raise such an amount, so it is like a last chance, a cry for help, ”says the mother.
He understands that he is different from his peers
Despite her disability, Veronica is very playful and social. When a girl and her mother go out, they sit on a bench or a swing, all the children in the yard run to say hello.
“Veronica is surprised that everyone is running and she can only sit down. We have a bike, I pushed her with it because she can’t think either. And anyway, he likes to socialize and goes home every night. Mentally, a child is normal, like the others, he only has that disability and, otherwise, he is no different from his peers, ”says Oksana.
Veronika herself understands that she is different from her peers. The girl’s mother was convinced of this:
“Veronica has a lot of puppets. Half a year ago there was a stage where she started cutting off all the dolls’ left legs, which she doesn’t have either. I say, Veronica, why are you doing this? She says,” That is also suitable for me. “Then I realized that she was beginning to understand everything herself.
Now he doesn’t do that anymore, but he sees me with two legs, brother with two legs. He can’t run either, he says to me: “Oh, how I would like to play hide and seek with Urte …”. I tell him to wait and when he has one leg he can run with it too. I’m trying to cover up the whole situation. She will turn 5 in October so she really gets it.
At home, she is quite independent: she has a car with which she can go wash her hands and brush her teeth. She tries to do everything herself. The saddest thing is when we go out and she sees that the children are running and she cannot, ”says the girl’s mother.
Verónica herself is waiting for an operation that would be like a miracle for her: the girl keeps asking her mother or going to the United States to visit her grandmother, where she will have her leg done. Oksana assures that her daughter’s dream will be pursued in every possible way.
