On Monday, the Kaunas party branch, Dr ,sos kelias, publicly announced that Neringa Venckienė was being nominated as the party’s candidate in this year’s Seimas elections.
I cannot participate in elections
However, like Rolandas Paksas, N. Venckienė will not be able to participate in the Seimas elections, since both politicians have lost their positions due to impeachment. Said restriction is provided in the Seimas Elections Law.
“Yes, people expelled from the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania through impeachment procedures could not become members of the Seimas in accordance with the current regulations and the latest decision of the Constitutional Court in the case of President Rolandas Paksas. And although the European Court of Human Rights has ruled accordingly, the legal regulation has not changed.
The Central Election Commission should not register that candidate, “Laura Matjošaitytė, President of the Central Election Commission, told tv3.lt.
The amendments have not yet been adopted.
The tv3.lt portal recalls that already this summer, the Seimas voted for the amendments to the Constitution, which would allow people expelled for impeachment to run for the Seimas after a ten-year break. However, the amendments got stuck in the Seimas: they were returned to the Law and Order Commission.
These amendments are intended to implement the decision of the Strasbourg court in the case of R. Paksas, who was removed from the presidency, against Lithuania.
N. Venckienė’s mandate was revoked by the Seimas in June 2014 by impeachment. Accused of N. Venckienė was arranged not to appear in the Seimas sessions.
The Seimas adopted the decision taking into account the conclusion of the Constitutional Court that the absence of N. Venckienė from the Seimas sessions without a justifiable reason is unconstitutional and that for these actions the Member of the Seimas broke his oath and seriously violated the Constitution of the Republic of Lithuania.
The Seimas elections will be held on October 11.
