V. Landsbergis was elected an honorary citizen of Vilnius – Respublika.lt

Professor Vytautas Landsbergis has already become the 18th honorary citizen of Vilnius. On Wednesday, the Vilnius City Council approved Mayor Remigijus Šimašius’s proposal to award the title of Honorary Citizen of Vilnius to the politician, public figure, bodybuilder and publicist Professor V. Landsbergis.

With dozens of important awards from various countries in the three decades since the restoration of independence, prof. V. Landsbergis has lived in Vilnius for more than 70 years and his activities glorify the name of the Lithuanian capital. The decision of the Council, as indicated in the municipal report, marked the historical role and merits of V. Landsbergis for the restoration of the independence of Lithuania, the development of free Lithuania and, at the same time, politics and culture from Vilnius.

“Without the efforts and courage of this man three decades ago, Vilnius and Lithuania today would be different, if anything. Vilnius already has a beautiful group of honored citizens, but it is obvious that this personality deserves as much respect as anyone else. And this year, when we have just commemorated the painful but victorious thirty of January 13, it is a very good time for that, ”said the mayor of the capital, Remigijus Šimašius.

According to the mayor, this honorary Vilnius citizen award is also a sign of respect for all Lithuanians who contributed to the origins of a free Vilnius at a difficult and fateful time.

The name of an honorary citizen of Vilnius is the highest evaluation that citizens can initiate and give to personalities for meaningful work for the city and Lithuania. The title of Honorary Citizen has been awarded since 1996.
