On the 24/7 program “Lietuvos rytas”, the president of Seimas commented on the most prominent current affairs.
Speaking about the changes in the presidential team, Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen said that she did not see many surprises in him, but also recognized another problem that G. Nausėda missed the opportunity to unite the society on the now highly opposed issue of the Istanbul Convention. . .
The Istanbul Convention will not yet be considered
“In my opinion, political leaders with a very high level of public trust really do have the opportunity to mobilize in a confrontational situation like this, and this opportunity has apparently not been seized in this particular case.
And when it comes to my colleague Tomas Vytautas Raskevičius, I have to communicate with him from time to time, obviously humanly it is not very easy for him. You get threats, such speeches, that are bordering on hate speech and often leave that line too far. It is disappointing that there is such a situation and resistance that there are people who allow themselves to communicate in this way and attack a person because they belong to one or another group, ”said the Spokesperson for Seimas.
When asked when the Seimas promised to return to the Istanbul Convention issue, V. Čmilytė-Nielsen emphasized that this was never planned in the spring session.
“This is an issue that is included in the coalition’s program as one of the issues to be resolved in the Seimas in a reasonable time. <...> It seems to me that the remaining half year could be used constructively, so that for those who have concerns about the need for the Istanbul Convention, for those who may think that all the problems with domestic violence are solved, so that we can discuss and prepare for the fall, move the debate to the political level.
Obviously, the public interest in this issue is huge, and it’s not bad, “he said, assuring that the convention theme is expected to come back later.
The EVS must be negotiated by the leaders themselves
Speaking about who should represent Lithuania in the European Council, the president of the Seimas emphasized that this should be a matter of agreement between the president and the prime minister.
“When we talk about this issue not in theory, but in practice, it is obvious that the optimal option would be for the two leaders to agree. Especially in the current period, when the EVS is discussing issues related to the pandemic, it would be more practical for the leader with more executive power to be able to represent Lithuania in those meetings where issues related to the very scope of the government are addressed. . <...> It is definitely not the way of fighting for it that will lead to the best result, “said V. Čmilytė-Nielsen.
Speaking about the pandemic and the economic consequences it caused, the president of Seimas acknowledged that there is simply no adequate solution to solve the problems, and the situation must be reconsidered every week.
The government’s work is appreciated
“It is clear that this government came to power at a time when the number of illnesses and deaths was anti-record. <...> We really have reason to look optimistically into the coming months. In my opinion, now is not the time to panic about the potential financial consequences.
Yes, they need to be monitored and evaluated, and there is a lot of money in the budget to combat the consequences, and I think it will continue to be. And when the goal of a massive vaccinator is achieved, that return to normalcy is likely to occur, ”said the Seimas Spokesperson.
He said he appreciated the actions of the current government.
“Obviously, in this situation where we are not the only ones, there is no single strategy that will lead us to victory. It is not a game, it is not a sport, it is a very difficult and uncertain situation that needs to be reassessed every week and find the path that is the least bad.
In this case, the sacrifice may be popularity or cheap popularity, as it would simply loosen those restrictions as much as possible, but it could happen that you have to come back in a few weeks or even sooner. I think what the government is doing cautiously now is good, ”added V. Čmilytė-Nielsen.
Commenting on the often close communication about vaccines, the president of Seimas acknowledged that the problem existed, but assured that it was also determined by the complexity of the situation.
“I think it would be wrong and naive to expect the government and the presidency to speak with one voice. Perhaps it should not be so. If the signal reaching the public is optimal it probably is not. But even the situation is very uncertain and changes to I think it’s important to talk to each other and send a signal about the most important things.
The processes that are happening are transparent, explanatory, and that part of society that wants to monitor them seems to me that it can do so in real time. Communication also depends on how complex or simple the situation is. If there were simpler challenges, I have no doubt that communication would be easier, ”said V. Čmilytė-Nielsen on the show.
The president of Seimas also spoke about the association law that will be considered in the spring.
“I know families who live this way, not only in Lithuania, but also in other countries. I had to visit and interact with them. I think it would be great if people chose to live together and who de facto They have been doing it for years, that they be recognized, and that they be granted those rights that they do not have today. Especially considering that granting those rights would not really make anybody’s conditions worse, it would only make them better, “said V. Čmilytė-Nielsen.
