The United States has imposed sanctions on Turkey for the acquisition of the Russian S-400 air defense system.
Sanctions have been announced against the Turkish Defense Industry Directorate, its director, Ismail Demir, and three other employees. The Secretary of State of the United States, Mike Pompeo, spoke about it.
The sanctions prohibit the Secretariat from using any US export license, as well as assets and access granted to US designated personnel.
According to his report, sanctions are imposed for participating in a large agreement with the Russian company Rosoboroneksport.
Pompeo emphasized that the United States had repeatedly warned Turkey that the acquisition of the S-400 system would pose a threat to US military technology and personnel, but would contribute to the financing of Russia’s defense industry and give Russia access to the Turkish defense industry. He stressed that no agreement with Russia is possible in the field of defense.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Monday that the US sanctions were illegal and that the leadership showed only arrogance in international law, Reuters reported, citing Interfax.
