Grenelli, who left office, confirmed to the publication that he had discussed the sanctions on Nord Stream 2 with US senators and members of the House of Representatives.

“The representatives of both parties are in favor of introducing even higher sanctions,” he said.

Grenell warned that the sanctions bills could be passed extremely soon and called on the German government to change its position on cooperation with Russia.

“Germany must stop feeding the monster without paying enough for NATO,” Grenell told Handelsblatt.

US sanctions were imposed on the Nord Stream 2 pipeline in 2019. in the end. Due to the sanctions, the completion of the project was postponed. The pipeline was previously planned to be launched earlier this year.

According to Washington, Nord Stream 2 will make the EU even more dependent on Russian gas. Ukraine, the Baltic countries and Poland have also expressed concern about the geopolitical importance of the project.

It is true that Grenell did not reveal what sanctions the United States could take.

Representatives of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline operator, for their part, argue that United States sanctions on the project would be illegal because they would discriminate against Nord Stream 2.

Berlin is skeptical

Germany’s position on Russia’s second export pipeline through the Baltic Sea, the Nord Stream 2 project, has not changed, and Berlin believes the new US sanctions would be inappropriate, said a spokeswoman for the Ministry of Economy and Energy from Germany.

“In our opinion, now is not the time to tighten the spiral of escalation and impose new sanctions. Now we have other challenges,” said Anna Sophie Eichler.

New German sanctions on the Nord Stream 2 project are threatened by the German newspaper Handelsblatt.

“I learned it from the media. Our position on Nord Stream 2 has not changed,” Maria Adebahr, spokeswoman for the German foreign ministry, told reporters on Wednesday.
