During the holidays, it has become commonplace to see the capital’s bridges lined with Christmas decorations. However, these bridges, which would become a long-term eye-catching place for the implementation of decorations or other ideas, are rare. However, a couple of months ago in Vilnius, near the districts of the old Markučiai and the new Paupis, an unparalleled cultural initiative was noticed: the local bridge over Vilnius was adorned with unique characters that sparkle with stories.

The works are a reflection of the life of the communities

The first to change the bridge, little known to anyone, began to be captured by “Puente. Cut ”page Facebook’e. The recordings of the works that appeared on the bridge, which began to appear one after another, aroused the interest of many residents. The bridge that connects the shores of Vilnelė has been turned into an exclusive open-air gallery, whose exhibitions, the defenders and the “residents” of the bridge, speak of the peculiarities and problems of life in the neighborhoods. The works respond to the lack of lighting in the surrounding settlements, the unpaved roads and the importance of the bridge as a link between the communities and the issues relevant to them. At the same time, the characters attached to the bridge also reflect the adventurous side of community life. Don’t be surprised to see a 1.25 meter high shoe or swimmers who haven’t escaped the cold on the bridge! In addition, more recently, the residents of the districts themselves had the opportunity to choose a name for the bridge. From now on it is unofficially called the Bridge of the Riders after the horses that once solemnly paraded through it.

The author of the initiative is unknown.

Although the initiative has been underway for some time, the name of the artist who decorated the bridge is still unknown. At first it was suspected that this was the work of the artist and tattoo artist Ugnė Vedeckytė – UVXTS. Created an image for the bridge news page. However, after contacting the developer from the capital, she denied such rumors. Residents and guests of the city can only guess who and why promised to return the bridge.

A happier everyday life

During the Covid-19 pandemic, the installation of bridges became a fun and safe way to enliven the daily life of local communities. So if this bridge is part of your daily route, we invite you to take a photo and write your opinion about this initiative on social media with a #Blocked play so that we can follow your impressions. We recommend that you keep in mind that no more than one family or one household member can walk in open spaces wearing masks.

Exit virtually

For those who live further away from the Markučiai and Paupis districts, we recommend that you act responsibly and stay home, and postpone your visit to the single bridge until another time. We invite you to develop installations and learn about the stories of the characters virtually by visiting “Puente. Cut ”page. Who knows when the bridge will adorn another character?
