On Friday morning, they painted 160 crosses on charcoal on the paved tiles next to the main building of the Kaunas municipality, directly below the windows of the mayor of the city, Visvaldas Matijošaitis.
“These crosses symbolize 160 trees that would have to be cut down when building the street,” explained Vita Gelūnienė, president of the Žemieji Šančiai community.
Residents saw such numbers when researching project proposals. Attempts to negotiate with the city administration have failed and there is no possibility of building a new street without cutting down trees.
“Cutting down trees would be a great loss both for the local community and for all Kaunas residents who like to relax on the shore of Nemunas,” said V. Gelūnienė.
Residents of Žemieji Šančiai have been fighting with the city authorities for several years over a street on the banks of the Nemunas.
“The new planned street will be designed not only for the convenient movement of local residents, but also for all Kaunas residents coming to the new beach. At the same time, more convenient access to Kaunas Šančiai school will be ensured.” said Paulius Keras, director of the Kaunas municipal administration.
According to him, this two-lane street was planned several decades ago in the most important urban planning document – the master plan.
Meanwhile, the residents of Žemieji Šančiai believe that the new streets are the most necessary for the residents of the apartment buildings that are planned to be built near Nemunas, who could reach the houses more conveniently.
