LRT radio was the first to report it. According to Dominykas Narbutas, the acting head of the Ministry’s Communications Division, people could be transported by government-ordered planes or individual commercial flights.
“So far, everything is at the level of consideration, there are several options, but no concrete decision has been made,” D. Narbutas told BNS.
He told LRT Radio that passengers with a negative COVID-19 test could be returned or tested at the airport.
According to him, a joint decision from the European Commission is still awaited, and Latvia and Estonia are being consulted.
D. Narbutas did not mention when the decision could be made, it should be approved by the Government.
“I think in any case there will be a decision at the government level and there should be an operations manager, I cannot say for the moment. As the borders have only been closed, these are only the first considerations on how to do it,” said a representative. of the ministry.
According to D. Narbutas, the ministry has received far fewer requests from the UK to return to Lithuania than during the first quarantine in the spring, however, he said this does not show a general picture of how many would want to return.
After Lithuania banned direct passenger flights from the UK, Transport Minister Marius Skuodis warned on Monday: It is not advisable to look for other ways to get to Lithuania now.
“Even transit flights, if they are still there, because they can be stopped at any time,” the minister said Monday morning. Not only flights from the UK are canceled, but also from seaports via the Eurotunnel. Airlines also cancel flights to the UK.
What are the passenger’s rights in case of cancellation?
The State Service for the Protection of Consumer Rights and the European Consumer Center in Lithuania (EVC) remind us of the rights of a passenger if a flight is canceled.
- First, be on the lookout for publicly available information from the service provider about canceled or delayed services and refunds.
- Contact the airline about the possibility of delaying the trip, changing the direction of travel, or accepting another offer of compensation (for example, to choose a coupon), if the service provider offers such an option.
- If no commitment is made with the airline, you are entitled to a refund or to be redirected to your final destination.
The Ministry of Transport reminds that to recover the money from an unused airline ticket, the passenger must complete the request on the airline’s website or send the request to the airline by email.
If the flight is officially canceled, passengers are entitled to a full refund of the flight. Or you have the right to exchange the airline ticket for another flight to the final destination as soon as possible, or at another time if seats are available). Admittedly, since some 40 countries have already banned flights from the UK, it is unlikely that you will even fly on another flight, not even with a transfer.

If the passenger voluntarily cancels the flight, which is carried out, the passenger can obtain a refund in accordance with the rules of the available fare and the refund conditions established by the airline.
It should be noted that an event such as the COVID-19 virus, which causes travel disruptions, can be attributed to exceptional circumstances beyond the control of service providers. In the event of cancellation or postponement of a flight due to exceptional circumstances, the compensation provided for in Regulation no. 261/2004, it may be unpaid to passengers.
Cargo flights between Lithuania and the UK are not suspended.
