The vice president of the Seimas says that no “political cooling” should be applied to these people.
“The decision on the potential candidates appointed to ambassador is strange. In my opinion, people with a lot of experience and excellent contacts should not isolate themselves from anything, but carry out the mission that would guarantee the representation of Lithuanian interests,” said Radvilė Morkūnaitė-Mikulėnienė to BNS on Friday.
He said he did not know the reasons for such a decision, but the arguments of the president did not convince the parliamentarians.
“I have only seen the president’s argument that he is not aware of any cases where deputy ministers or post-ministerial ministers have been appointed, but he himself has appointed Deputy Minister Darius Skusevičius (Ambassador – BNS), who has been pursuing a career very quickly “said the conservative.
“These people are old wolves of the diplomatic service, so to speak.” These are not people who came from politics, they have always been part of the diplomatic community, I find it strange to say that they are not inappropriate, “he added.
He also says it would be strange if the “political cooling” of such officials were regulated by law.
“In the morning, the situation seems the same, after a while: other evaluations. I take into account that in the morning we are talking about the intention to propose a law, in the afternoon that intention seems abandoned. We can agree with the opinion from the president that the assessment can be individual, it would be strange if there was a law, ”said Radvilė Morkūnaitė-Mikulėnienė.
The Seimas member says she is considering that, according to that logic, the entire civil service should be changed after each change of government.
“(…) I think some people couldn’t be on the president’s team if, in hindsight, I say hypothetically, some kind of chilling principle was applied. People work in one government or another, then they work in the presidential team, so here too the question can be asked about what, how much and when it is necessary to cool down ”, said the major of the TS-LKD faction.
G. Nausėda declared last week that he had no intention of appointing the former ministers of National Defense and Foreign Affairs R. Karoblis and L. Linkevičius as ambassadors, because they need a period of “political cooldown”.
President Asta Skaisgirytė’s advisor told 15min.lt on Friday that the regulation of “political cooling” is being considered by law, but did not comment in detail on possible proposals.
Later on Friday, the president told reporters that he was not convinced this needed to be regulated by a law that would restrict the access of former politicians to career public officials of the state for some time.
Mr. Nausėda did not respond to the question whether the “political chilling” would also apply to his advisers seeking to hold public office.
