“Mark Esper was fired. I would like to thank him for his service,” Trump said in a message using the word “finished,” which could mean “completed” or, in military jargon, “destroyed.”
The president has indicated that Mr. Esper will be replaced by Christopher Miller, the current director of the National Counter-Terrorism Center.
Esperis was fired a week after the US presidential election after openly rejecting Trump’s claims that soldiers could be sent to quell public unrest.
Trump, who has gone to court on suspicion of voter fraud, although the evidence he has provided thus far appears very weak, has until January 20 to hand over power to Biden.
