Trump mitigated the prison sentence for his ally Stone

“Roger Stone is now a free man!”, According to a White House report released a few days before the figure’s execution in federal prison.

Trump’s decision immediately sparked new allegations that the President recklessly interfered in the work of the U.S. justice system to help his friends and allies and punish critics and implicit enemies.

Stone, one of Trump’s oldest trustees, was convicted in November last year of lying to Congress, manipulating a witness, and obstructing the House of Representatives to investigate whether the Trump campaign had learned from Russia to help him win the 2016 elections.

The White House report, in a poignant tone, reiterates Trump’s accusations that Special Prosecutor Robert Mueller was investigating a crime that had never been committed. He says the charges against Stone should not have been made at all.

“The simple fact is that if the special counsel had not carried out a completely unfounded investigation, Stone would not have been threatened with prison,” the White House said.

In a statement to the US media, Stone Smith’s attorney, Grant Smith, said his client is “incredibly honored that President Trump has exercised his wonderful and unique power under the United States Constitution for this act of grace. “

The Trump administration has intervened in the past to help Stone. After prosecutors recommended up to nine years in prison, Attorney General Bill Barr, repeatedly accused of acting as Trump’s personal attorney, stepped in and said the punishment was too harsh.

All four prosecutors in the case withdrew, and the newly appointed prosecutor recommended that Mr. Stone be sentenced to three to four years in prison.

Stone was Trump’s sixth assistant, convicted of charges related to Mueller’s investigation of Russian interference.

Trump himself was indicted last year for exceeding his authority, but in the end, the Senate acquitted the president.
