The Vilnius construction company Tilsta for 28 million. Eur will manage the Nemunas waterway from Kaunas to the Curonian Lagoon and install buns. The Interior Roads Directorate signed a work contract with the company, reported Kauno Diena.
According to the head of the directorate Vladimir Vinokurov, the works will begin this year and will last for three years, after which new opportunities for the development of maritime transport will open.
“It is a historical fact because that work was carried out for the last time at the beginning of the 20th century. At the time of Antanas Smetona, intensive navigation was carried out on the Nemunas. In Soviet times, there was only simulated work and they were not done serious management works on this river, so the condition of the street was constantly deteriorating. Now we will be able to organize the street from Kaunas to the Curonian lagoon to be suitable for shipping serious cargo, “V. Vinokurov told Kauno Diena.
According to him, each year about 700 cubic meters accumulate in the Nemunas. m of various sediments to be excavated, and when the buns are installed, the sediment will not accumulate in the furrow and settle between the buns; the furrow will clean itself, so street maintenance will be minimal.
According to V. Vinokurov, after two years in a row there was a hydrological drought, cargo ships could not navigate the Nemunas, and after the canal was fixed, shipping will be possible throughout the year.
BNS recalls that the Inland Waterways Directorate has rescinded the tender for the installation of buns in the Nemunas from Kaunas to Klaipėda three times this year. This was done in February, after receiving complaints from two suppliers and deciding to adjust the minimum criteria for qualification and evaluation of tenders, and for the second time in April, due to an excessive supply. The latter was attended by the only participant, the Latvian company BMGS. For the third time, the Public Procurement Office (PPS) ordered his dismissal in June, and the courts were also unfavorable for the management.
