The US government announced on Friday that the popular Chinese-owned video program TikTok will no longer be available for download starting Sunday. Additionally, the WeChat platform will no longer be available for payments and corporate correspondence.
The United States government justified such a decision as a threat to national security.
Tensions between the US and China have recently escalated and the administration of President Donald Trump seeks to sell the US unit of TikTok to a US company.
“The Communist Party of China has shown that it has the means and the motivation to use these programs to threaten the national security, foreign policy, and economy of the United States,” Commerce Secretary Wilbur Rosso said in a statement.
With the entry into force of the ban, the favorite Chinese application WeChat and the TikTok platform will disappear from Apple and Google online stores.
However, while the WeChat ban in the United States will take effect on Sunday, existing TikTok users will be able to use the app until November 12, when the platform’s total US ban will go into effect.
The US Department of Commerce also noted that TikTok has time to address threats to US national security by that date.
This week there were reports that Silicon Valley giant Oracle could become TikTok’s technology partner in the United States. However, some US lawmakers have opposed the Chinese company ByteDance, which owns the platform, to remain a shareholder.
As for Chinese giant Tencent’s WeChat, the ban could disrupt a popular social media and financial transaction platform in the United States. However, in a lawsuit filed in court, officials from the country said they did not intend to impose measures on those who use WeChat for normal personal communication purposes.
