Winters like this year will attend less and less, but can lead to greater losses

The winter of 2020-2021, says G. Stankūnavičius, was extremely changeable not only in Lithuania, but also in Central and Western Europe: “According to the associate professor, the winter of 2012 was similar.

However, winters like this year, according to G. Stankūnavičius, will be less and less rare in Lithuania: “In the context of climate change, warm winters should increase and cold winters will not disappear anywhere. They will appear less frequently, but we will look more extreme because the average temperature will rise slightly.

The last time we could see so much snow, according to the climatologist, was eight years ago: in March 2013, the thickness of the snow cover reminded us of the images of this winter. The strongest air intrusions in the Arctic, which have occurred every second or third winter, will probably arrive now only every five years, but, says G. Stankūnavičius, such changes can bring greater losses, because we will not be prepared for them.

In the next few days, the winter weather again

The joys of warming will not last long: in March, says the associate professor, we will have another cold: “The heat wave is already passing, today it will leave Lithuania, the weather will be a little cooler. Early next week, a little heat wave again. We should expect more serious changes in the second half of the week: the cold at night should return, and only around zero or a little more during the day. “

At the end of March, says G. Stankūnavičius, we can expect the cold to disappear next year. Popular wisdom offers to decide on the climate of the next seasons from the first four days of March: “According to the first day of March we decide on spring, the second – on summer, then – on autumn and winter. If we follow this tradition, we can also guess ourselves “, recalls the climatologist.

Based no longer on popular wisdom but on weather knowledge, the next few days foresee a change: the snow will melt and the flood may form somewhere, ”says G. Stankūnavičius about the weather of early spring.
