The Department of Prisons under the Ministry of Justice reports that in 2021. On Friday, February 12, the convicted Ričardas Suodaitis did not return to the open colony of the Alytus Correctional Center. He was discharged to go to the Kaunas hospital to see an infectologist. The convict was supposed to return at 5 pm, but did not return. They wanted it. However, R. Suodaitis himself returned to the prison the next morning, on February 13.
Prisoners serving sentences in open colonies have the right to visit medical institutions, businesses, and seek work independently and without protection. Recently, however, several convicts have abused this opportunity and do not return to the open colonies in time to request permission.
On Saturday, February 13, inmates Rainuold Zakharov, born in 1976, and Donatas Počas, born in 1980, did not return to the open colony of the Alytus Correctional Center. The prisoners were released to shop at Alytus. Both, like most prisoners in open colonies, have been sentenced to less than a year in prison.
The search for prisoners who did not return was announced. On the same day, the “refugees” were arrested. Officers from the Security Management and Criminal Intelligence Division of the Department of Prisons found Mr. Počas in the Lazdijai district. The police arrested R. Zakharov in Vilnius.
Pre-trial investigations have been initiated into these events. The Department of Prisons wishes to thank the police officers who contributed to the search and helped find the convicts successfully.
A restless weekend at the Alytus Correctional Center is not exceptional. Unfortunately, these abuses against convicts, not returning with permission to leave the colonies open, are becoming rare. Convicted persons with different dependencies often abuse the freedoms granted by law.
