Observers rated the protest in Khabarovsk as the largest in a few years. Protesters reportedly chanted “Freedom”, “Moscow left” and “Putin is a thief” in the streets and squares.
Local media reported that the protests were peaceful and that no one was arrested.
The governor’s representative, Nadezhda Tomchenko, began thanking protesters for their support on Instagram. She wrote that that association had long been seen in the region and addressed protesters directly, saying, “We will make sure their voices are heard.”
In defense of his innocence, Furgal was elected two years ago to the post of governor of the Khabarovsk region that borders China, defeating a former position representing the country’s ruling party, United Russia, in the elections.
He is considered “the organizer of the assassination attempt and (suspected of killing several businessmen” in 2004 and 2005, the Investigative Committee said in a report).
The Furgal Liberal Democratic Party (LDPR) has condemned the charges of politically motivated murder. “This is a very big political case,” LDPR leader Vladimir Zhirinovsky said after Furgal’s arrest on Thursday.
