“We have been seeing a slight decrease in auto parts thefts since 2019, only during the first quarantine period did their number start to grow again. In recent years, there have been very few car thefts, only a few insured vehicles. There are isolated cases of theft of trucks or agricultural machinery. “When auto parts are stolen, they are not disassembled properly, like in auto repair shops. Thieves rush in, avoid getting caught. So stealing computer equipment or the cockpit steering wheel breaks the car windows and cutting the headlights damages the hood and wings of the vehicle. The more technologically complex and innovative the detail, the greater the damage, “says a representative of the insurance company.
According to the insurance company, one fifth of all detail thefts are thefts of mirrors and headlights; these details are often “removed” by long-fingered people. “Next on the list of the most stolen parts are parking systems, air bags and steering wheels. We record cases where parts are stolen only from a certain car model, for example catalytic converters or trunk curtains. A new part of this type can cost more than 1000 euros, so there is a demand for used parts and their price ranges from 400 to 600 euros, ”says V. Katilienė.
The insurer noted that not only detail thieves should take advantage of the dark period of the year that has just begun.
“People should pay more attention to car safety. Filming cameras or video recording systems can protect against long-distance use of parking lots. Of course, they are not omnipotent if the parking lot is not illuminated and not you can see the face of the thief ”, says the representative of the insurance company.
V. Katilienė also recommends installing a video recorder.
“When a vehicle has a video recorder, it disciplines those around it. When a thief inspects a vehicle and sees that it is being filmed, they usually walk by. There are several cases where a thief disassembles the exterior of a vehicle and goes unnoticed by the registrar. Meanwhile, if the crime is committed in the cockpit of a vehicle, the video recorder is usually stolen. So surveillance cameras in the room or parking lot could help identify thieves, ”says V. Katilienė.
