These politicians changed their minds about the Seimas elections: both Covid-19 and the persuasion of their colleagues changed their plans.

The tv3.lt portal invites you to recall which politicians or their advisers have publicly said that they do not intend to participate in the 2020 Seimas elections, but that they have changed their minds.

Colleagues pushed his mind

In October of last year, Algimantas Salamakinas, a Social Democrat who had worked in Seimas for almost three decades, told the ELTA news agency that he was considering ending his career in parliament and not participating in the Seimas 2020 elections.

“It just caught our eye then. I think that’s what everyone needs to say. I’m not one of those who, at the age of 80 and over, wanted to sit down and work at the Seimas,” said A. Salamakinas.

However, on the list of elections approved by the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party, A. Salamakin was assigned the number 22. As the 67-year-old politician said, he was pressured by his party colleagues to change his mind about the elections.

“One side of me whispered that maybe we needed to finish, but the friends at the party kept calling. He said that compared to others running in other games and on our roster, age feels even more solid. But, the other side of me said that I still needed help.

It is up to me to let the electorate decide. I’m not a single member, I’ll just be on the list. Let the voters decide, if they see that I still need to be in the Seimas, they will vote, if not, I will go to the reservation, ”said A. Salamakinas.

If colleagues were persuaded, the result would be the opposite

In a letter to the peasant faction last July, Agnė Širinskienė, a member of the LVŽS and chair of the Seimas Law and Order Committee, stated that he had no intention of participating in the Seimas elections.

“I can assure you that I personally do not plan other elections for the Seimas, so I do not plan to take a seat on the list or in a single-member constituency.” <...> No duty is important to me, therefore, we have agreed with the elder of his faction that after the formation of the Government we will discuss the possibilities of replacing me in the Law and Order Committee, “wrote A. Širinskienė in a letter to the peasant faction.

However, A. Širinskienė not only remained the chair of the Seimas Law and Order Committee, but also changed her mind about participating in the Seimas elections. She is number 7 on the LVŽS election list.

When asked what made him change his mind, the MP said he wanted to finish the job he had started.

“It is a duty to continue the work that the LVŽS has begun. <...> I had the opportunity and the sufficient time to evaluate all the circumstances that fundamentally determined, as I have already mentioned, the desire to begin the work that has already begun and not allow the state to take over the forces that once manipulated it sufficiently ” said TV3.lt. Širinskienė.

The Seimas member jokes that if party colleagues had tried to persuade her to participate in this year’s elections, the result would probably have been the opposite.

“The friends at the party know that it is generally better to give myself to decide for myself, without knocking or pressing, because there can be an opposite effect of pressing,” laughed A. Širinskienė.

I decided to work after the pandemic

In February of this year, Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis assured that his adviser, Lukas Savickas, will certainly not participate in the elections with the LVŽS.

“It just caught our eye then. We even talked about it, and how it turns out depends on many circumstances, the prime minister said.

However, L. Savickas, who is currently the Vice Chancellor of the Government, will participate in this year’s Seimas elections at number 16 with the LVŽS.

L. Savickas wrote about his decision to try to succeed in the Seimas election on his Facebook account this week. The candidate says he has been fueled by the work done so far by politicians in fighting the Covid-19 pandemic.

“The past six months have determined my firm determination to participate alongside Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis’s list in the Seimas elections and to do everything possible not to stray from the chosen path, so that not only the DNA plan continues its journey but also other jobs on the road. ” Yes, we have made mistakes, but the great work done and managing the pandemic have shown that concentration is and will be especially important today and in the years to come, “wrote L. Savickas.

It wouldn’t work if they couldn’t express their opinion

Exactly one year ago, last July, the then president of the “Order and Justice” party, Remigijus Žemaitaitis, assured that he had no intention of participating in the 2020 Seimas elections. This time, he said that he could change his political career for the sector. private.

“I am working at Seimas today, after a year, apparently, my term will end and I will move to work in my private sector, which is what I worked for before,” R. Žemaitaitis told News Radio last July.

The Seimas member said that he no longer saw himself as a politician in the future.

“I plan my life in a way that makes it difficult for me to imagine myself in politics. A politician who comes for four years and thinks he will come for centuries, I sincerely regret that politician. It means that he has come to the Seimas and will reach the masses, he will not and will see the state government as an economic part, “said R. Žemaitaitis.

However, it is now clear that the newly formed Freedom and Justice Party will be led by its president R. Žemaitaitis in this year’s Seimas elections.

When asked why he changed his mind about the election, R. Zemaitaitis laughed as he waited for this question from the journalists. He said on the radio show that he would not vote if parliamentary work remained the same as it was at the time.

“I thought it would be a day if journalists followed him. I said that in such a situation I would not see the opportunity to participate in the Seimas elections. Otherwise, I have a job in the private sector, my specialty, where I could work.

I do not survive at all like other Seimas members who are afraid to vote against, fear of opposing party leadership, fear of expressing their opinion, especially of single members, and obediently obeying some statements by party leaders. I remember going here for those alcohol bans, for all the other things. How much are Seimas members worth now if they can’t defend their positions? ”- R. Žemaitaitis said on tv3.lt.

The promise not to run was immortalized in the record

At a meeting of the Homeland-Lithuanian Christian Democrats (TS-LKD) faction in May, the Minister of Social Security and Labor, Linas Kukuraitis, said he did not intend to participate in the Seimas elections.

In the record of the meeting of the TS-LKD faction, when L. Seukis Džiugelis, a member of the Seimas, was asked if he already had his promised place on the electoral list, L. Kukuraitis appreciated the question and said: “I will not go to the polls”.
