The capital club has decided to say goodbye to desperate head coach Donald Kairis, with whom it signed a three-year contract a season ago.
Giedrius Žibėnas will assume the presidency of the team’s chief strategist.
“First of all, we would like to apologize for the team’s recent results, which do not satisfy either the club or the Vilnius basketball community. Therefore, there could be no other decision after this match. We believed in Donald and his work in Vilnius, but looking at the results, change is inevitable. We wish him success in other stages of his career, “says Darius Gudelis, Chairman of the Board of Ryto.
It is interesting that at the post-match press conference, D. Kairys assured that he had no intention of resigning.
“No, I do not have that desire at all. I am a coach, a fighter, I love and respect the team and I want to help it as much as I can. I am not going to retire, but I understand that there will be a meeting with the club leaders and a conversation. And if there is such a decision, it will be theirs, “said the strategist.
“Rytas”, led by a 43-year-old specialist from Šilutė, who started the season strongly, but then completely collapsed, was eliminated from the FIBA Champions League already in the first stage, unexpectedly did not reach the Final four of KMT and shared the 3-4 place in the LKL championship.
Before moving to Vilnius, D. Kairys worked successfully in the VTB League clubs Tallinn Kalev and Saratov Avtodor and helped Kęstutis Kemzura lead the Euroleague team Piraeus Olympiakos.
This is the second Lithuanian basketball coach to lose his job this week. A couple of days ago, Rimas Kurtinaitis, who was fired by Chimki in the Moscow region, was forced to say goodbye to his combined post and board.
