As the director of Šiauliai Hospital told the media, it was only a matter of time before the infection reached the medical institution.
“It is no secret that since the beginning of September a great spread of the infection has begun in various institutions, organizations and companies. This has affected many sectors, unfortunately many areas of public life. Of course, we look with anxiety at what it was happening, and you can probably say that it was only a matter of time before some problems happened in our medical institution, ”said R. Mažeika on Tuesday in Šiauliai.
He said the situation was concerning because the first test carried out did not show the patient an infection.
“That fact was confirmed yesterday, a patient who was admitted to the Šiauliai Hospital 10 days ago, underwent a PCR test according to our established procedure, it was negative, the patient was in treatment, being prepared for a nursing hospital. According to all the rules, we have to repeat the test a second time and it came back positive, ”said the head of the Šiauliai Hospital.
He said there were a lot of questions then, so the testing of the entire chapter began.
“Unfortunately, we already have 6 infected patients and 5 staff members today,” he said of the current situation.
“The condition of the patients is mild or asymptomatic, we would not even suspect that the staff also have this virus,” said the director of the Šiauliai Hospital.
The Department of Nervous Diseases will continue its work in separate rooms, but the department itself will be closed. Those providing advice “will be directed to a clean room where patients will be placed.”
“And this department will be monitored for two weeks, the condition of all patients will be monitored regardless of their test result,” said the head of the Šiauliai Hospital. Some 80 potential contacts are currently being investigated.
He asked the patients to understand that part of the outpatient visit would be delayed.
“Patients will definitely experience this inconvenience, the scheduled consultation in the neurology department may be postponed for another time,” he said of the future changes.
He too could have been infected in the hospital.
The largest coronavirus outbreak is currently opening at Radviliškis Hospital. R. Mažeika, director of the Šiauliai Hospital, spoke about why the coronavirus is returning to medical institutions again.
“We have a lot of asymptomatic cases at the moment, which is the first reason. Second, in the winter we stopped providing scheduled operations, the hospital had an absolutely safe service, only the help we needed and we could have the luxury of having a person in the room, then we feel much safer, ”he said.
The interviewee said that staff respond appropriately to the virus, it is understood.
“There will be cases of this type, it should not surprise us,” said the director of the Šiauliai Hospital.
He said it was not yet clear why the first infected person was infected with the virus.
“We perform a PCR test on all patients, because the prevalence in Šiauliai is very high, so we test 15 percent of our staff, it is mandatory. But of course we cannot answer exactly today, the Control Division of Infections did an investigation and it is very difficult to say what it was. Whether it was a patient who was admitted, she still had an incubation period, and after a few days, even without symptoms, it turned out that she was ill. It is practically impossible to answer today, “he said. the interlocutor.
He said that the version that the patient was infected in the hospital should not be ruled out either. Therefore, it is not yet possible to say exactly whether the infection has spread to other departments.
