The pond I of the Kretinga Manor Park was filled with 80 pike, the pond II of this park 200, the pond III 250, the pond of the Kretinga Monastery in the Pastauninkas Park 70, Rūdaičiai 400 and Šukė 100.
The water bodies of the Kretinga district have been supplemented with fish based on the research of ichthyofauna resources carried out last year and the long-term fish farming plan drawn up, according to the municipal report.
According to last year’s research, most of the district’s ponds are in greatest need of predatory fish. When they are missing, the entire ecosystem suffers: too many small carp are introduced, pigeons begin to “bloom” in the domain of phytoplankton, the transparency of the water decreases, the underwater vegetation is poor, the carp that feed on zooplankton and some species prevail of fish do not enjoy spawning conditions.
“This year it has been decided to let in the pike, which is most lacking in the ponds of our district. By regularly replenishing ponds with fish, our goal is not only to restore fish populations that are declining due to recreational fishing, but also to protect the ecosystem and improve water quality, ”says Lina Rimkuvienė, Chief Specialist of the Division of Local Economy and Property Management of the Municipal Administration of the Kretinga District.
Representatives of the Kretinga district municipality administration and the Kretinga Environmental Protection Inspectorate of the Klaipėda Board of the Department of Environmental Protection of the Ministry of Environment participated in the restocking of the ponds.
The fish farming works are financed by funds from the special program to support environmental protection of the Kretinga district municipality. The supply of the district ponds this autumn cost 2,900 euros.
