Officials from the Kaunas County Dainava Police Station of the Kaunas County Police Commissariat, led by prosecutors from the Alytus District Attorney’s Office of the Kaunas Regional Prosecutor’s Office, successfully completed a pre-trial investigation of 12 episodes in which a 22-year-old resident of Kėdainiai is accused of fraud. A total of 12 people from various Lithuanian cities (Vilnius, Panevėžys, Klaipėda district, Radviliškis, Tauragė district and other cities and districts in the country) were affected by their criminal behavior and illegal acts.
According to a pre-trial investigation, between November 2019 and the end of January 2020, this young man fraudulently benefited from trustworthy people, so he devised a smart plan: he, along with another person who was serving a preventive prison, joined a popular online website. ad sites and finding an interesting ad about the most expensive items for sale, they falsely presented themselves on someone else’s behalf and negotiated the price of the purchased item, falsified a bank transfer statement about the payment and presented it to a unsuspecting honest seller.
The list of detainees includes HP and Lenovo laptops, Nikon and Canon cameras, iPhone mobile phones, Sony Play Station and X-box One, as well as smartphones, watches, tablets, home theater systems.
The seller, believing that a successful transaction had been made, gave the item for sale to the person who came to pick it up or agreed that they could pick up the desired item at the self-service terminals of the packages.
In this way, they fraudulently misled a variety of everyday household items of 12 people in the country: HP and Lenovo laptops, Nikon and Canon cameras, Sony Play Station consoles and X-boxes. One, Beats Studio 3 wireless headphones, Casio watches, Apple iPad tablets, home theater systems, iPhone mobile phones. In total, several expensive items were fraudulently purchased for more than € 2,500.
In the course of the pre-trial investigation, it was established that these frauds were committed by a man who did not work anywhere and did not have an official source of livelihood, had previously been convicted of theft, fraud, property damage and was administratively punished on repeated occasions for stealing small properties from supermarkets. The defendant cited the lack of means of subsistence as the main motive for the crime, since he did not have a job and needed to live.
He repented of all the crimes committed and fully confessed his guilt, as he realized and understood that he had deliberately misled the unsuspecting population. The man explained that the items were delivered to unknown to him, simply by selling or transferring them for a quantity much less than the market price.
During the investigation, officials from the Kaunas County Chief Police Station, the Kaunas City Dainava Police Station, conducted numerous interviews with victims and witnesses, sanctioned and applied procedural coercive measures, searches and other procedural actions were carried out to gather meaningful evidence. The investigation lasted intensively for almost 9 months and after all procedural steps had been taken, under the direction of the Prosecutor of the Alytus District Prosecutor’s Office of the Kaunas Regional Prosecutor’s Office, the case was transferred to a court hearing.
