The Panathinaikos Club of Athens, which has announced its intention to withdraw from the Euroleague, will likely face strong sanctions. An unusual solution for a club can be extremely expensive.
The Greek team has a long-term contract with the Euroleague, and the club would have to pay around € 10 million to end this. If you decide to go to court, this amount may even increase.
Panathinaikos is expected to go to court and accuse the Euroleague of failing to meet its obligations. The club’s leaders have repeatedly complained about the lack of respect and the partial judgment of the tournament organizers, and after the end of this season they said they had not yet received the bonus for the wins.
In this case, the Euroleague would probably prepare a counterclaim, the whole process could take time and it would be even more costly to untie the club.
Another path Panathinaikos can take is the sale of a license. Greeks may transfer the opportunity to participate in the Euroleague to another team for a certain amount. However, such a transaction must be approved by all other long-term license holders (including Kaunas Žalgiris), which would be difficult to guarantee.
Launching Panathinaika between leagues is not an unprecedented event. In the 2000-2001 season, with an option, the Athens team decided not to play in the Euroleague, but in the short-term Super League, where they reached the final. However, the solution was not that expensive then, and the experiment lasted only one season.
