Gateway for city guests
“As Kaunas will become part of the Rail Baltica rail transport project, it will naturally give this place even more importance. It will soon be a real gateway to the city for guests arriving in Kaunas by train, so the territory abandoned desperately calls for an improvement, ”said Kaunas Mayor Visvaldas Matijošaitis.
According to Paulius Kero, Deputy Director of Kaunas Municipality Administration, the Station Market architecture competition will be announced in the near future. Based on the best professional offers, a market review is planned.
The first works begin
“Competition for architecture, design, preparation of technical projects: all these procedures can take up to a couple of years. If we don’t want to wait any longer, we are already starting to manage the territory,” said P. Keras.
The modern container-style trade pavilions will hit the station market in a couple of weeks. They will replace the old wooden kiosks already demolished on the MK Čiurlionio street side.
The severely deteriorated façade of the market in this part needs to be remarkably renovated. It is also planned to change the coatings, install new lighting.
“None of the merchants working in the area will suffer as a result of the planned works; the number of outlets here will remain unchanged, only they will be much better, more convenient for the people who work here and more attractive to visitors to the market”. Keras added.
Kaunas regained market territory in November last year. As it issues permits to trade in public places, the fee is collected and the territory is administered by the budgetary institution “Parking in Kaunas”. Funds for commerce go directly to the city budget.
