On Monday took place the presentation of the National Network of Poverty Reduction Organizations (NSMOT) “Review of poverty and social exclusion in Lithuania 2021”.
The presentation provides an overview of the latest poverty indicators and their changes compared to previous years, as well as the challenges of people living in poverty and recommendations to address poverty.
One in five people is at risk of poverty
NSMOT representative Aistė Adomavičienė presented the latest poverty indicators and the main changes. According to the review, in 2020, the risk-of-poverty threshold is 430 euros per person. People who do not receive this income are said to be at risk of poverty.

“Lithuania has never deviated from 20 percent and about a fifth of the population is at risk of poverty,” says A. Adomavičienė.
The at-risk-of-poverty rate in the country in 2020 was 20.9 percent. and increased by 0.3 percentage points compared to 2019. The risk groups remain the same.
It is observed that 2.7 percent. the number of children at risk of poverty has decreased from 20% last year.
“Unfortunately, we see that other groups – there are no positive developments and we really have everything to think about,” says A. Adomavičienė.

The at-risk-of-poverty threshold in 2020 was € 430 per month per person and € 904 per family consisting of two adults and two children under 14 years of age.
People with incomes below the minimum consumption needs (MVPD) are considered to live in absolute poverty. In 2020, the MVPD was approved: 257 euros.
The unemployment rate in August was 12.2 percent.
The NSMOT representative, Rimgailė Baltutė, presented the situation of the unemployed in the country. The at-risk-of-poverty rate for the unemployed is one of the highest. According to data from the Department of Statistics, in Lithuania in 2021. in the second quarter, the unemployment rate stood at 7.4 percent. The unemployment rate registered in August was 12.2 percent.

R. Baltutė says that it would be necessary to help the population to get a job by individualizing the aid.
“The current system is not designed to cover individual situations,” says R. Baltutė.
