The ship, which is over 40 years old, belongs to the Navy. The main function of this ship was to search and deactivate mines. The Lithuanian Maritime Museum has planned to preserve the ship and use it for educational activities. This ship could become a museum, serve the education of the younger generations, explorers and cadets, as well as broaden the public’s horizons on the sea, ships, the army.
According to museum spokesman Edwin Ubis, the onboard exhibit would be installed in a few years. Visitors could visit all three decks of the ship. You could enter the wheelhouse, control rooms where the exhibition could be held, as well as the cabins of officers, captains, sailors, who felt closely how they felt, visited the technical facilities, learned how this ship searched for mines and the disabled. It is being considered that special souvenirs can be purchased on board.
However, this is still a plan, as the ship’s fate is unclear. The Marina does not have a decision on whether the city will find a suitable mooring place for this ship. For its part, the museum cannot take a boat without knowing where it can moor it.

“We have been waiting for almost a year for a decision on what to do: use or remove and transfer to the museum? We want to move to the museum, have both a technological and a historical monument. Of course, if it is not docked, the ship can be moved to one berth or another, but we need a decision this year on whether the municipality is allowing it to take over and build it on one berth or another.

Based on research and recommendations, we would be inclined to build on the Castle Bridge, across from Karlskrona Square, but if the new owner or the city sees other options, there is an opportunity to reconsider, just consider the trains and find a more location attractive. We would like to make a decision this year whether to use it for ourselves or to start preparing it for the museum, ”said Nedas Ignatavičius, representative of the Navy.
Considered various places
The issue of the destination of the ship in the municipality has been addressed on several occasions. The matter was discussed again Tuesday morning by members of the Commission on Maritime Affairs and Inland Waterways. Heritage conservationists and other specialists also expressed their views.
Sūduvis has already been offered several mooring locations, near Meridiano, as well as near the Castle Bridge, and ideas have been heard to build a berth near the Maritime Museum.
Heritage conservationist Laisvūnas Kavaliauskas said that in Meridian, warships would fit “very well” into the overall silhouette of the old town, but after consulting with colleagues, he decided that the best place was Castle Bridge.

“The ship was built in the 1970s, the background in this place would be the architecture, the ugly post-war buildings, the ship standing still in Denmark would enliven the rather dull landscape. Unambiguously this place is optimal. image, during the council meeting, Alina Velykienė expressed doubts about how we would look with a military object in the city center. I want to point out that I had to be in many historical ports, almost all have warships, starting with neighboring Liepaja , which keeps a similar ship at the dock, ending in London, where we saw the ‘Belfast’ cruise, is part of the image of the state, “said L. Kavaliauskas.

Councilor Aidas Kaveckis suggested that the city consider two mooring locations for the ship, one of which would be safe in winter and the other during the summer season. One of those places could be the Castle Bridge, the second, next to the museum.
“Given that seasonality is very high in our country, it would be attractive and educationally better to have it both in the city and at the Albatross monument for 3-4 months, when the train is bigger,” suggested the councilor.
Council member Arvydas Vaitkus commented that the boat moored on the Dane River will cause problems both for the future increase in shipments and for the rowers who are happy with the newly opened modern rowing base. Rowing in two boats would make it difficult for him. A council member suggested tidying up the dock next to the museum where the ship could be safely.
Petras Bekėža, president of the Lithuanian Seafarers’ Union, said that he had been working on the port tugs for more than 20 years and felt that stormy weather prevailed during the cold season, so it would be safer to moor “Sūduvis” in the Castle Bridge.
“Do we have a lot of maritime objects in the city that would show the uniqueness of Klaipeda? No. This is an attribute of the maritime state, it would decorate the old town, it would be visited a lot, it would create the conditions to be on board, ”said P. Bekėža.

Will it crowd the center?
Alina Velykienė stated that she lacked basic information about how much space the moored “Sūduvis” would occupy in the center of the city, or that the ropes would not obstruct pedestrians and cyclists.
“The question why we are building a military transport object in the old town, why we are not making the river full of people, boats, but a military transport object, ‘Sūduvis’, remains unanswered. This is an object too big for our superstructure. Maybe he is not right, Meridian maybe even bigger, it has become part of the image. The decision is made by the city council, the answers must be comprehensive, clear to everyone, so that we do not have to build a ship and be able to pass, we will have to climb the ropes, “said the politician.
The unanswered question is why we are storing a military transport object in the old town, why are we not making the river full of people, boats, but a military transport object, – said A.Velykienė.
A representative of the Navy assured that the 47-meter-long and 8-meter-wide ship would not cause any inconvenience to pedestrians or cyclists. It would be moored to the dock using existing bollards.
I would like to build in the center
The Maritime Museum itself is more interested in building a ship in the center to be well visited. Romualdas Adomavičius, deputy director of the Maritime Museum, said that the pier next to the museum, where the ship would end up in a “pocket”, is not suitable for shipbuilding at this time;
“Looking at it from a distance, a map or a plan seems like a good place, but it is not safe, it takes a lot of investment to make it safe, where the cultural value, the exhibition can be sustained and we can be calm. The interest of the museum is that the ship is visited a lot. We do not guarantee that you will be visited in abundance if you stay safe on the museum docks. Here, it is an interest, a commitment for the city, the museum and the maritime state to have an object with a rich flow, that educates the Lithuanian society, foreigners who come to Lithuania as a maritime state, maritime culture. It would also be a youth education center, a place where thematic events could be held, ”said the deputy.
It is estimated that it would cost around a million euros to order the dock next to the museum, when at that time up to 100,000 euros would suffice on the Castillo Bridge.
You need a boat, right?
Dave River’s manager Deivis Blikštis offered another alternative to building a ship: across the castle bridge, closer to where the ferry once took people to Smiltyne. This place has good access, high traffic from all sides, plus unmixed and unoccupied buildings.
Klaipėda Mayor Vytautas Grubliauskas stated that there would be no place that would suit everyone and meet all safety requirements.
“It just came to our attention then. Those places have been searched for almost a year, all options almost considered, new twists and turns. Let’s try to focus the discussion on the conservation aspect. Don’t push the boat 2-3 times at a time. year by installing several berths. Naturally, when you have to dock, observe the condition of the ship, it will be possible to return to that discussion. The navy must have a solution, I confirm, that it cannot continue indefinitely. the mayor concluded.
Whether the city will find a place for Sūduvis must be clarified at the council meeting. If no solution is found, the ship will be cut off.
