“We want to send a clear signal to our partners and allies that we feel committed to the security and stability of the region,” the newspaper quoted Rear Admiral George Wikoff as saying. Four more warships should participate in the exercise.

On Friday, the US Department of Defense expressed concern about the Chinese military maneuvers near the Parsel Islands. Washington has accused Beijing leaders of further destabilizing the situation in the South China Sea. This sea borders China, Vietnam, Malaysia and the Philippines. The parties are involved in territorial disputes. China is accused of increasingly militarizing the region by the United States and its neighbors in the conflict.

Sino-US relations are currently very tense. The United States government is making strong accusations against Beijing for the coronavirus pandemic. Relations have been overshadowed, among other things, by trade disputes, Chinese interference in Hong Kong’s autonomy, and the internment of Muslim Uighurs in China’s Xinjiang province.
