Beavers were spotted in the fall
According to Nijolė Šniokienė, director of the Rokiškis Regional Museum, beavers were observed in the mansion’s ponds in autumn. Traces of activity have become particularly apparent recently: large trees have been bitten one after another. Now the destructive activity of beavers has intensified: the animals are preparing for winter reserves. As a result, huge trees are being destroyed one after another around the ponds. Not all were overthrown by the beasts: some were only severely bitten and abandoned. “It is a pity to damage the trees. We wrapped some in a net, but this is not the way out, ”said the museum director.
The beavers not only damaged several trees surrounding the ponds, but they also damaged the ponds themselves. If a dam is built there and the number of beavers increases, it is obvious that the bodies of water that are already being cleaned will start to flood anyway. Therefore, according to the museum director, as soon as he saw that there were unwanted inhabitants in the ponds, the problem was fixed to obsolescence. However, eradicating beavers is not so easy: they cannot be shot in the city.
The elder helped
Valentinas Skeirys, head of the Economics Department of the Rokiškis Regional Museum, confirmed to Rokiškis Sirenai that attempts are being made to protect some of the trees by surrounding them with a net. However, this does not deter the animals: if a tree is surrounded by a net, they begin to “manage” the adjacent ones.
“I will not be surrounded by a network of all the trees,” said the interlocutor.
According to him, the only solution to the problem is to expel the beavers from the ponds. How to do this? As the action takes place in an urban area, the only possible way to get rid of beavers is to catch them with special traps that meet the requirements of the European Union. According to the interlocutor, the museum thanks the Rokiškis elders for their help in solving this problem: it also received permits to catch beavers and took care of the procedure to catch them. According to V. Skeiris, the capture of beavers has already begun.
Catching is not easy
Darutis Krivas, Chief Specialist of the District Municipality’s Architecture and Heritage Protection Division, confirmed to Rokiškio Siren that the municipality is aware of the problem and that steps have been taken to eradicate beavers from the ponds. This is not the first time they have tried to host this attractive place. In the past, however, the ponds were covered in low-value shrubs, which were destroyed by beavers in the first place, so the damage was less obvious. Now, after the eradication of low-value vegetation, beavers have no other source of food than trees.
According to the interlocutor, beavers are preparing their place of residence and food supplies – green tree branches. There is no other way to achieve them than by barking a tree and throwing it into the water.
It is not clear exactly how many beavers are in the ponds. “It just came to our attention then.” It is unlikely that a beaver lives alone, there are probably at least a couple of them, “considered D. Krivas.
Trapping beavers, he said, is a permit. However, the permission granted and the traps set in no way mean that the beavers will immediately rush towards them. “It may take more than a day to catch them,” he said. And until they are captured, it is only natural that beavers continue to accumulate food, destroying the surrounding trees.
And what fate awaits already damaged trees? According to Kriv, it is obvious that they will have to be cut.
Additional.
Rokiškis town elder A. Krasauskas informed Rokiškis Siren that he managed to successfully catch one juvenile beaver on Tuesday morning and three more on Wednesday morning, October 28.
