The press service of the General Board of the Interior Committee of the Minsk City Executive Committee told the Interfax news agency that there were “arrests under administrative procedures” in the capital on Saturday. However, he did not specify how many people were detained.

The day before, OMON detained five students singing “Marseille” in English in the lobby of the Minsk State University of Linguistics. A few hours later, the detainees were released.

Earlier Saturday, Belarusian Education Minister Iharis Karpenka ordered measures to be taken to tighten controls on access by outsiders to educational institutions, as well as to strengthen the security regime there.

Belarus has been the subject of protests for almost a month since the August 9 presidential elections, which were won by authoritarian leader Aliaksandr Lukashenko, who has ruled the country since 1994. The opposition and Western countries consider these elections to be rigged.
