The several kilometer natural tunnel, which is comfortably surrounded by greenery, is a very popular place for photo shoots and walks as a couple. Before the pandemic, couples even flew from Asia to get married in a place of fabulous beauty.
Like any place at least somewhat popular with tourists, this one also has its legends. It is said that the corridor of green trees existed during the life of Čartoriskys in these places, supposedly it had become a haven for young lovers. Another is that the train tracks in the forest are the work of a young Polish engineer. He allegedly fell in love with a girl who lived in Klevan and laid the rails to make it easier to get to her from Orzhiv.
But the truth is even more interesting than fairy tales about love. In fact, the rails were laid for military purposes when these territories were occupied by the Soviet Union. The “Tunnel of Love” stretches between the villages of Klevan and Orživ, it is a part Kovel-Rivne lines. Near Orzhiv, the rails are divided into two parts. Some of them lead to a secret Cold War military base disguised as a forest.

A lot of military equipment is still stored
During the Cold War, trees were especially planted along railroad tracks or highways that led to strategic secret locations. The abundant foliage of the trees hid the military equipment in motion.
It is true that there were also absurdities. In Poland, for example, the Soviets had made an absurd mistake that allowed the West to find secret nuclear bunkers. This story was described in an article published a couple of years ago by the Polish archaeologist Grzegorz Kiarszysius.
