The Attorney General informed tv3.lt about this. In fact, the case was transferred during the quarantine, which is why it was only after repeated questions that the representatives of the prosecution admitted that they had taken procedural measures in this regard.
The pre-trial investigation began in August last year, when a baby of just one year fell from the sixth floor of an apartment building in the capital. Upon arrival, doctors determined the baby’s death.
According to the study, while taking care of the baby and putting him to sleep in a stroller, the nanny opened a window in the room with a windowsill 10 cm from the floor. When the boy woke up, she went out into the kitchen with him, leaving the window open. As the babysitter washed the dishes, the fed baby returned to the room and fell through the open apartment window.
The defendant’s responsibility is alleviated by the fact that the woman sincerely regretted what happened and admitted her guilt.
The Penal Code establishes that any person who has carelessly taken the life of another person is punished with arrest or imprisonment for up to four years.
The criminal case was transferred to the Vilnius City District Court.
Parents were not at home
We recall that on the day of the disaster, there was nothing in the terrace apartment from which only one child fell.
However, police officers caught up with the fallen baby with no signs of life, even before firefighters had to lift the ladder.
Authorities went up to the terrace from an adjoining apartment. Doctors on the terrace discovered that the boy was no longer dead.
It seems that no one except the babysitter has seen the same calamity.
Interviewees say they only understood about the disaster when services were assembled. When the tragedy occurred, there were no parents. Numerous police and investigators arrived on the scene. The disaster scene is thoroughly inspected and witnesses are questioned.
Medical help was needed for the surprised babysitter.
Judging by the photos of the scene and the comments of some readers, the windowsill from which the child fell could have been installed below what is required by law.
If so, who should be responsible for this? Its designers, builders, or institutions that recognized it as fit for use? The investigation of the accident is controlled by Vilnius prosecutors.
However, they do not reveal any details as to whether the tragedy may have been caused by improper installation of the window. Last year, the Communications Division of the Attorney General’s Office answered questions from tv3.lt about the possible inappropriate design or construction of an apartment building:
“We would like to inform you that in the pre-trial investigation into the death of a child who falls out the window, all versions are being investigated. Compliance with the window through which the child fell under the standards will also be assessed. of construction “.
It now appears that the charges were brought only against the babysitter who cares for the child.
