“The next task is to protect other branches, assess whether there are such dangers. Anyway, the oak withstood everything: snow, winter, wind, as if we did not feel there could be any danger, ”Albertas Stanislovaitis, head of the State Service for Protected Areas, told BNS on Thursday.
“Additional supports can be built alongside other branches or the specialists will see how the existing supports are doing, or are they good,” he said.
He said that the bracket that held the broken branch had recently been replaced because the old one was rotten.
According to A. Stanislovasitis, it is currently difficult to calculate the damage and it is also difficult to name the cause of the branch break.
“We still do not have a methodology to calculate the damage, because there was rot in the branch, it is a natural process, now we are only seeing what we must do to prevent fractures in other places (…) 100 percent. The answer is probably already. It will not say why the branch broke, but the initial assessment is that the branch has internal rot, that branch is long and it simply broke, ”said the director of the service.
He also said that he could not say whether the break in the branch was affected by the change in support.
“How much that process has had, I don’t even know who could appreciate it, they are natural things. Old, rotten wood: it is very difficult to assess accurately, ”said A. Stanislovaitis.
The Stelmužė oak was supported by four new wooden supports in early March. The Zarasai District Municipality reported that the branch broke on March 31.
The State Service for Protected Areas has previously stated that experts were consulted prior to the work.
Stelmužė oak is probably the most famous natural monument, one of the oldest in Europe and the oldest and thickest tree in Lithuania, its age can reach around 1.5 thousand. years and more.
The volume of natural energy at a height of 1.3 m – more than 9.5 meters, at the roots – 13 meters. Above, the Stelmužė oak is 19 meters long.
In order to preserve the genes of this oak, deep oaks are grown in various places in Lithuania, and a Stelmuž “oak“ proukūkis ”grows near the Antakalnis district of the capital of the National Center for Visitor of Protected Areas.
