The company announced on Thursday a possible collision of “Space 2004” with the Chinese missile stage. The total mass of both objects is about 2.8 tons. If they had collided, a lot of debris could have been in orbit, endangering other orbiting devices.
LeoLabs predicted a collision probability of 1 to 20 percent.
The Russian space agency Roskosmos later confirmed that the collision was likely.
The Kosmos 2004 military navigation and communications satellite was launched in 1989. This system is still used to maintain communication between Russia and submarines and surface vessels. Its last satellite went into orbit in 2010.
The satellite was threatened with a collision with the third stage of the Long March missile launched by China in 2009.
