According to doctors, almost all people infected with coronavirus admitted to hospitals are not vaccinated. And people who don’t want to get vaccinated are throwing themselves at family doctors, asking them to record a diagnosis that they can’t get vaccinated, asking for an exemption from testing.
Rasa Vilkienė, a renowned sports coach and promoter of a healthy lifestyle, found herself in the intensive care unit due to complications from the coronavirus. A physically strong and active woman learned she had coronavirus by taking a COVID test before work. True, the woman was still at home for some time, suffered from coronavirus pain and a high temperature of almost 40 degrees.
Now Rasa admits that her life was in danger and the woman barely escaped the clutches of the coronavirus: it is your last day. No kidding here, I had mutual pneumonia as a consequence. “
Lithuanian hospitals are filling up fast
And the country’s hospitals are rapidly filling up with coronavirus-infected and unvaccinated patients. The deterioration of the coronavirus situation in the Klaipėda region is gaining momentum: there are no more free beds in the university hospital. Up to 16 people diagnosed with severe pneumonia are fighting for life in resuscitation. Doctors no longer surprise young patients, who have turned 30 and are already in serious condition.
“He dies unvaccinated, he lies unvaccinated in the intensive care unit. And anyway, out of 88 patients, we have 8 vaccinated, one of them with a single dose ”, says the head of the hospital Vinsas Janušonis.
The situation is tense. According to the hospital manager, in just one day, 16 coronavirus patients filled the entire reserve of crib beds. Therefore, with the increasing flow of COVID-19 patients, Klaipeda University Hospital is turning to smaller medical institutions for help.
“The Republican Hospital has enough patients and we are activating the Kretinga, Šilutė and Tauragė hospitals since Sunday,” says V. Janušonis.
The fourth wave of the pandemic and the increasing flows of COVID-19 patients are also welcomed by Santara Clinics. There are currently 39 adult patients being treated for coronavirus, 7 of whom are in the intensive care unit. In total, the resuscitation has 9 critically ill beds, so the remaining 2 are likely to be filled soon.
According to Feliksas Jankevičius, director of the Santara clinics, the number of hospitalized patients is constantly growing, more than 90 percent of them are infected with the delta strain, unvaccinated: “Undoubtedly, all hospitalized patients are not vaccinated, almost 100 percent. “
Coronavirus infections are increasing daily
And while fall has yet to begin, the coronavirus situation is deteriorating across the country. During the day yesterday, 548 new cases of contagion were detected. And in 14 days, the number of new cases per 100,000 inhabitants increased to 226 cases.
And, according to experts, these figures will only increase, because from autumn more and more people will return to work, children to kindergartens and schools. Around fifty new COVID-19s are already being hospitalized every day.
“The situation is deteriorating rapidly and the number of hospitalized patients in COVID units has exceeded 300, which was also an indicator in the Government of when it is worth adopting stricter restrictions. I do not deny it, the bad situation is related to the events that occurred in Klaipeda. And the vaccination, despite the great efforts, was slower, ”says Minister’s advisor Justina Aleksaitė.
It is true that some hospitals in the country are forced to reduce services. After filling the infectious disease department of Kaunas Hospital, coronavirus patients are transferred to the cardiology department.
Saulius Tvirbutas, representative of the Kaunas Hospital, says: “We have already filled the infectious diseases department, there are about 50 places there, it seems that it has been filled. Doctors already provide services only for the treatment of this disease. He is still planning to move to another department: cardiology. Several patients are already there. “
Doctors from the Šiauliai Republican Hospital also talk about full beds for coronavirus patients. They also receive coronavirus patients from Klaipėda, Mažeikiai and Plungė. And due to the increasing flow of patients, the infectious disease department is expanding again.
Zinaida Kovaliova, doctor in infectious diseases, says: “The second subdivision had to be opened, it is very unfortunate that the department of Pulmonology has been closed. We are not full yet, but the section is half full. “
And while ambulances transport people with COVID-19 to hospitals, active opponents of the vaccine are launching themselves on GPs and demanding a diagnosis that they cannot be vaccinated, in addition to asking for an exemption from testing.
“They think they have many chronic diseases. They ask us to issue them a certificate that they cannot be tested, that they are nauseous, that they are vomiting, that they have had a cold for a long time, narrow stomachs,” says Natalija Šertvytienė. head of the department of family medicine.
It is true that the rate of vaccination in the country has accelerated. 1,350 people received the first dose of the vaccine yesterday. In total, almost 65 percent of people over the age of 18 have already been vaccinated in Lithuania.
