I. Šimonytė’s candidacy for the post of prime minister is proposed by a center-right coalition, consisting of conservatives, liberals and the Freedom Party. They have 73 of the 141 seats in the Seimas.

The decision to approve the candidacy of the Prime Minister is taken by a simple majority of votes in open voting.

However, the rulers are not sure that the vote on the Prime Minister’s candidacy will be smooth, because the entire faction of the Liberal Movement – 11 members – and Seimas Spokesperson Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen are fed up with COVID-19 or are in self-isolation.

“We hope that there will also be responsible voters in the minority factions of the Seimas, because no one has expressed great reproaches against I. Šimonyte,” said Jurgis Razma, the first deputy speaker of parliament, the Conservative.

“This vote is not essential when the opposition has to leave office, it is not a vote on the government’s program. In this case, the vote is based on personality, ”he said.

On Thursday, President Gitanas Nausėda presented I. Šimonytė’s candidacy for the Seimas. During that time, he met with all the parliamentary groups that requested it.

Once the Seimas approves the candidacy of the Prime Minister and the President appoints him, the Prime Minister, no later than within 15 days after his appointment, will present to the Seimas the Government formed by him and approved by the President, submit to consideration of the program of this Government.

Born in Vilnius, I. Šimonytė has an education in economics, has worked in the Ministry of Finance from economist to secretary, deputy minister and finally minister of Finance. He held the last post in the government of conservative Andrius Kubilius in 2009-2012. After that, I. Šimonytė worked at the Bank of Lithuania for three years, taught at Vilnius University, until in 2016 he entered parliament with the Christian Democrats of the Lithuanian National Union.

I. Šimonytė was included in the first number of the Conservatives list, but he is not a member of the party.
