On Thursday, the Seimas decided to comply with the request of the Attorney General Evaldas Pašilis and allowed the Seimas member V. Gapšis to be prosecuted, arrested or otherwise restricted his freedom. 97 members of the Seimas voted in favor of the draft resolution presented by the inquiry commission, 7 opposed it and 7 parliamentarians abstained.

Seimas Commission of Inquiry spokeswoman Irena Haase of the Seimas Tribune said the Commission of Inquiry had not received convincing data and facts about possible political persecution. “We believe that the court has jurisdiction to hear cases and the court should rule on the guilt or innocence of the accused person,” Haase said.

The member of the Seimas V. Gapšys regretted that the commission of inquiry examining his problem had shown a “total superficiality” and had not deepened its arguments.

Seimas member Kęstutis Glaveckas regretted that the process has been going on for a long time and that the person is constantly so “hung up”. “The process is too long, you need to protect such young and talented people, you can’t keep them ‘hanging’ by a rope,” Glaveck said.

The member of the Seimas Andrius Mazuronis regretted that in this case there is “selective justice”. “It is politicization, when the prosecution begins to become politicized, we no longer become a rule of law and not democratic,” he lamented.

The commission of inquiry on the legal immunity of V. Gapšis heard the arguments of the Attorney General of the Attorney General Justas Laucius and V. Gapšis himself.

The Seimas had ordered the commission to carry out the investigation before December 23 of this year.
