Seimas will seek to reduce the financial resources of the municipality and consumers by replacing overhead power lines with cables, as well as creating the conditions for the expansion of the distribution network.

On Tuesday, after the reading, the parliamentarians approved the pertinent amendments to the Laws of Electricity, Energy and Renewable Energies drawn up by President Gitan Nausda.

Deputy Energy Minister Egidijus Purlys says the changes are intended to encourage the replacement of worn-out overhead cable lines or the relocation of lines that make it difficult to relocate lines.

According to him, the changes are beneficial both for municipalities looking to attract investors and developers looking to implement new projects more quickly before the final electricity consumers are known.

The amendments seek to reduce discounts from 100% to 50% for consumers who want to rebuild or relocate power lines operated by ESO 20 years ago or earlier, which would hamper, say, construction.

It is also intended to justify the possibility of urgent relocation of lines if the user so wishes can carry out the work on their own.

The amendments suggest that 50% (instead of 40%) of the connection to the electricity distribution bill will be covered by new consumers and generator consumers, which currently cover all costs. The exemption would apply to disadvantaged consumers, who continue to pay only 20% of the connection price.

If the builder’s access networks are to be built in an area dedicated to infrastructure development, he must cover 100% of the preparation costs.

These amendments are proposed to the president of the Seimas, because now only a small part of the power lines is underground, most of the cables are laid in cities, and during construction, improvements, the need for underground cables is increasing. They, according to the president, allow to ensure an uninterrupted electricity supply in adverse weather conditions.
